"Setting the Stage for Service Learning Relationships."

We shared literature, music, and research related to these topics, and we brainstormed ways we can help each of these groups. Students wrote letters to people living in nursing homes to brighten their day. We also learned some basic sign language!

Sixth grade Advisory students completed the Learning to Give unit entitled "Setting the Stage for Service Learning Relationships." Students looked critically at the myths and the realities associated with those living in poverty, those who are elderly, and individuals with physical and mental disabilities. We worked together to write a definition for "prejudice" and "discrimination" and discussed how these can negatively impact our community.

Students work to write the myths and realities of poverty.

Ashley and Joslyn work together to draw a picture representing the misconceptions of the elderly.

Students presented their drawings to the class.

Students practice sign language!
