Onekama Nearly Wins Victory Against Kalava
Jake

On Saturday Kalava just beat the 5th grade Onekama Portagers. Playing in Onekama both teams played tough. It seemed to be a low scoring game in the first quarter. No teams were scoring many baskets with the score 4 to 6 Kalava’s lead at the end of the first quarter.

In the second quarter the scores rose. There were more steals and shots. The scores became close in the third quarter. The kids started to play harder. But something else happened Kalava kids began to leave because of lack of playing time.

As the fourth quarter began the scores were 13 to 12 still Kalava’s lead. Then Onekama scored putting them in the lead for the first time. But with ten seconds left Kalava scored and went on to win 15 to 14.

Onekama boy’s basketball takes a dive
By Ashley H

On Saturday January 18, 03 a home game at Onekama fifth grade boy’s play their third game against KND. All the cheerleaders were rooting the boys on, as they played hard. Cheerleaders were hoping that they would win. It seemed as thow Onekama would make the shot and then the other team would. Althow there was a bad time for the other team.

Apparently the other teams coach wasn’t being fair. The other coach wasn’t letting kids that didn’t play any quarters go in. The coach was only picking the boys with more experience. The kids decided to walk home Even in shorts and tank tops. The parents of the kids had to go and get them.

Then back at the game it seems an Onekama student got a personal fowl and got two shots. Both shots were misses. The shots that he could have got would have got them in the lead. But instead it coasted them the game. The score ended up to be fourteen to fifteen. Now the word from the coach is "They played a good game just had another loss but there is hope and more games to come."

And that is true that there are more games to come.

Kaleva beats Onekama
By: Gus

The bobcats beat the portagers. In a tight game 13 to 14. I (Gus ) scored 4 points in that game. The players like how they played. The coach (Tom Koon) says the boys played well and next time they’ll get little bit more of Onekama.

The score was not the matter. They left in a few players the whole Game. I missed a lot of shots and so did my team. They were a good team and we played good.

Onekama vs. K.N.D. School
By Angela

On Saturday the girls cheered for the Onekama fifth grade game. We lost by one point. They played Kaleva Norman Dickson. The kids on the other team started to walk at the third quarter. They did that because the couch didn’t let them play. We were wining but the other team cough up with us.

But the other team won, and the score was 15 to 14. That’s right we lost again but we will win some time. It was a close game. The cheerleaders did a good job cheerleading. Couch Koon said, "You played a good game boys." They played a very good game.

The Onekama boys fifth grade basketball team played Bear Lake. They played on January 11, 2002. The game was at Bear Lake. Onekama lost twenty-two to twenty one. The next time Onekama plays Bear Lake they will show no mercy.

At the end of the game the coach said, "They had more gym time." I thought it was a good game. I still can’t believe we lost. I think we worked together really well. I had a lot of fun.

On Saturday 18 i† was the fifth grade boys 3rd basketball game. It was a very close game, but Kaleva Norman Dickinson did win. Only by one tiny point. They both played a good game though.

I think the cheerleaders had lots of fun and did very well. After the game our coach was proud of us and the boy’s basketball coach was proud of them. He said, "I am very proud of the boys even though they lost, witch was only by one point.

Baldwin shows no mercy for the Portagers

The Portagers went down at Onekama. The scores were 6 to 12. The game was played at home in Onekama's gym the coach’s quote was. "You guys played a great game but they played better."

The game was played very well even though the 5th graders lost. But they tried there hardest. An that’s what really matters. Basketball is really fun. So it not really if you win or lose its how you play the game.

Portagers VS Bobcats
By Orion

On Saturday January 18th 2003 the Portagers versed the Bobcats. The game was in the Onekama school gymnasium.

It was the 5th grade Portagers third game. This game was one of the best it was so close you couldn’t tell who was going to win. But in the end the Portagers ended up losing to the Bobcats, but only buy one. How did this happen? I’ll tell you, it happened when it was the Bobcats turn to do the free through. The first free through shot number seven was up to shot and he made it, but his second shot he wasn’t so fortunate. An so that one point lasted the whole game. But it was still a very exhilarating game.

In the third quarter are team was doing good. Are team was a head by four points, but then they started scoring points. Before you new it was the fourth quarter. In the fourth quarter we would score a point then brethren would score a point. With six seconds left on the clock it was fort teen to fifth teen. Joe K got fouled so he got to shoot he missed them both and we lost but it was a good game. After the game Coach Koon said we played a good game.

Baldwin defeats the Portagers
By Thomas

On Wednesday, January 15, the Baldwin Eagles and the Onekama Potagers went head to head in a basketball game. It was at the Onekama's gym. The game was at five o'clock. They had a game because boys signed up to play. All the boys that sighed up to play are Thomas, Jordan, Joe K, Stephen, Chase, Gus, Cody, Danny, Jake, Jon, Brandon, Karl, Mike, and Zac.

The score of the game was 8-12 Baldwin. The Coach Tom Koon said "you guys played a great game but they played better." There is an assistant coach and his name is Steve Kosiboski. The 5th grade boys have lost all five games they played. The 5th grade boys are not aloud to shot three pointers or they will have to sit on the bench with the coaches.

A Substitute
Karl

In basketball my position is a substitute. A substitute can go out in any position. My favorite position is a right or left guard.

Our first game was against Bear Lake. I got an assist by passing it to Mike in the game. I got that because he made it. It felt very cool to have an assist.

We lost the Bear Lake game 21 to 22. Even though we lost we had a fine time playing. The coach said we did a good job but we just need to practice passing a little. That was January 11.

Basketball is my favorite sport.

Onekama. Vs. Bear Lake
By Chase

In the first game of the season we were pretty good and we were up against Bear Lake. We started out with the blue team. Both teams scored points but their team scored more. We had about two awesome blocks. It was really fun. Then it was half time and we headed back to the locker room.

Once we got to the locker room things got a little confusing because the couch started switching us around. He put kids in that are having fun in and then the kids that don’t really look like they’re having that much fun. He switched me to guard and I didn’t have a clue to what I was doing. Finally I got the hang of it and the quarter was over. In the last quarter we scored almost enough points to win the game but they scored on more foul shot and won.

Can cheerleaders cheer boys Basketball to Victory?
Column written by Katie

This year the boy’s basketball team hasn’t been going as good as planed. The team has a lot of good players but they aren’t as tall as the other team’s. The Portagers versed the freesoil Pirates. The game was on the 20th of January. This game was played at home like all of the others. The Portagers lost 12 to 25. They probably lost on account of the other team was way bigger. Could the cheerleaders get the crowd more "rowdie"?

The cheerleading coach is Megan Mattson. She plus some of the sixth graders taught us a lot of cheers. We have practice almost every Tuesday. I try to cheer really hard and practice hard too. Will fifth grade boy’s basketball ever win? We’ll find out on Saturday.

Onekama vs. Kaleva Norman Dickson
Katlyn

Last Saturday the boys played against Kaleva Norman Dickson. I was cheerleader for Onekama. The people who were cheerleaders were Katie, Anja, Angela, Ashley and me. The score was 6 to 12. We lost. We had 6 and Kaleva had 12.

One of the cheers we did was rowdie. Another one was hot to go. My favorite one is success. There was some kids from 3rd and 4th grade there. We let them cheer with us.
