Lung Volume
Erin Brown

The way we measured lung capacity in my group is by using centimeters and millimeters. In my group are Mary and Ryan C. Mary’s highest bubble diameter was 20 cm. Ryan’s was 19 cm. Mine was 18 cm even though I almost had 20 at one point, but my balloon popped! Mary must have good lung capacity to get that much! I would say that’s really cool! My group did a good job on measuring lung capacity!

We measured lung capacity by mm and cm. First we blew the bubble then it popped and left a big ring. We measured the ring and that showed capacity.

You blow a bubble and measure it. Then you take your highest measurement and compare it to a graph that tells volume. My highest capacity was 2.1 L. That is about normal. It depends on how active you are and how tall you are or if you have asthma.

Measuring Lung Volume

In science we learned about lung capacity with straws, soap, rulers, and a garbage bag. See it works like this. Every time you breathe you use your lungs. When you exhale into the straw and soap, that makes a bubble.. You keep going until it breaks and while you’re blowing there is a person who is measuring with a ruler. After the bubble breaks the person with the ruler writes down your number and that’s how we did our lung capacity.

My lung volume was 2.4 L. My bubble was 21 cm or 5 inches. The experiment was that you get a garbage bag, a straw, some tape, and soap. Then you would put the straw in the soap and blow and you’d get you lung volume. How big is your volume?

Today my class and I measured our lung capacity. We had to use a plastic bag and put some soap on it and tape it to a desk. Then each of us blew in the soap using a straw. We used mm to measure. We did it over and over and over until we got our highest. I had to do it five times to get to 210 mm. I got the second highest in my group. If we had more time I would have probably got 240 mm or 250 mm.

If we go outside a lot and run around we have a higher lung capacity. If we sit inside and watch TV all day we would have a lower lung capacity.

This is going to be about how we measured lung volume. We first took a plastic bag, soap and stuck the soap on the bag and blew bubbles. The bigger the bubble, the more lung volume you had. I have about 1 L of lung volume.

Now listen here. This isn't any scientific way to measure this, but it comes pretty close. It is really fun to do. So if you don't have enough money to get it done professional style, do it this way!
