Teens Against Tobacco use (T.A.T.U.), the 1997 edition of Smoke-Free Class of 2000, teaches teens to talk back. Developed by the American Lung Association, American Cancer Society and American Heart Association, The T.A.T.U. program lets young people in grades 9 through 11 teach students in grades 4 through 6 to avoid tobacco use. Participating Teens benefit by: becoming leaders, accepting responsibility, developing the information and skills they need for success and it reinforces their decision not to use tobacco. Younger children benefit by: seeing positive role models tell the truth about tobacco. Facilitators: Jim Moore and Amy Sanders of the American Lung Association Sponsorship: Smoke Free Manistee, Mason County Tobacco Reduction Coalition and the American Lung Association Location: Portage Point Inn, Onekama, MI (see image at bottom of page) provided their charming hotel free of cost. Their chef created delicious pizza and cookies. Comments by Participants: "What a great day. We learned so much that we can take back to teach the younger kids. I think this will make our SADD Chapter stronger. The presenters were great. They really knew their stuff and weren't phony at all. We prefer learning by doing rather than from a book." |
