Onekama Wins Again!

On Friday, February 5, Onekama participated in the 1999 West Shore High School Quiz Bowl. We were defending champions so the other teams were out to get us. Our first game was with Walkerville. We won by forfeit because Walkerville did not show up. No reason was given. Our next match was with Manistee Catholic Central. The match was close at the halfway point with the score being 45-30 in favor of Onekama. We pulled ahead in the second half and won by a score of 110-30. Our next match would prove to be a nail bitter and a preview of things to come. We played Mason County Eastern. The score at the half was 45-55 in favor of MCE. It was a close contest with MCE winning on the last question at the buzzer for a win by a score of 85-90.

This put us in the losers bracket and had to play the winner Pentwater to avenge our earlier loss to MCE. Our game with Pentwater at the half was 65-0. The final score was 155-20. We now had to play the team that had beaten us by only five points earlier in the day. Because it was double elimination, we had to beat MCE twice in order to bring home the trophy. The first game score at the half was 80-0 in favor of Onekama. The final score was 165-25. We now had to beat them a second time. It was a close game and at the half the score was 50-15 in our favor. After the half, MCE put a surge together and came within 5 points of tying the score. It came down to the last question, with Onekama answering correctly and winning by a score of 75-60.
