Students in Onekama's Natural Science class were involved in a service project at the Orsini Fish Hatchery on May 11th. Members on the class took part in an ongoing project to improve and maintain the fish hatchery that is used to produce steelhead for release into the Betsie River and eventually Lake Michigan.

The hatchery is funded by the Manistee County Sport Fishing Association and produced over 40,000 steelhead for release this spring. Students were involved in performing three major tasks, release of 20,000 plus steelhead, improvement and bank stabilization of the release creek and initial cleaning of the fish tanks in the hatchery.

This spring's field trip is a follow up to an earlier trip in the fall of the school year. The project helps to give the students a better understanding of the year long process in raising trout for release. Students also gain a real sense of pride in performing a valuable community service.

Mr. Hunter and the members of the Natural Science class would like to thank Mr. Kevin Hughes, elementary principal, for his direction and assistance in the hatchery project.

Nichole and Jake take time out to share a little lunch with Nichole's new found friend.
