Peer Resistance Training

The Onekama Chapter of Students Against Driving Drunk has been awarded a grant from the Michigan Coalition to Reduce Underage Drinking--MCRUD--which is administered by Prevention Network, Michigan's coalition to support and expand community substance abuse prevention efforts. The grant in the amount of $3,700 is to conduct a SADD Peer Resistance Training. (Training Photographs)

Chris Wasserman, school social worker and Sally Manke, SADD Advisor wrote and will implement the grant. The peer resistance training will educate teams of eight SADD Members from Onekama, Benzie Central, Brethren, and Manistee High Schools. These students will then take their program back to fifth and sixth grade classrooms in their districts. Portage Point Inn has contributed the use of their facilities for the September 24th and 25th training.

MCRUD is a statewide coalition made up of members from urban, suburban, and rural communities throughout Michigan who are dedicated to reducing and preventing underage drinking. The coalition does this by providing grant opportunities and technical assistance to community groups working toward this end.

Prevention Network is a statewide program, which for fourteen years has offered technical assistance, training, a newsletter and other information, minigrants, and networking opportunities to community groups involved in substance abuse prevention.

For their awards, Prevention Network and MCRUD choose projects which are innovative, use research-based and appropriately-targeted strategies, are culturally sensitive, and are potential models for other communities. Groups receiving these grants represent the diverse community involvement in prevention in Michigan. Their projects are among the finest prevention efforts in the state.
