Dear Parents,

Thank you for your time and support throughout this past school year. This has been a wonderful second year of teaching. I am sad to see it end. Working together, we have had a very successful year involving many positive learning experiences. Your child's growth and achievement depends on your interest in his/her education. The following are just a few of many activities that you can do to help your child enrich skills this summer.

  1. Read silently and/or aloud daily – stories, signs, directions, recipes, magazines, etc.
  2. Participate in the Manistee County Public Library Summer Reading Program.
  3. Practice addition and subtraction facts using real objects and flashcards.
  4. Check time on the clock at five-minute intervals.
  5. Count money – pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters; and using prices, buy and make change.
  6. Measure length, height and distance of objects with a ruler, a meter stick and tape measure.
  7. Keep a monthly calendar to check the day, month, date and special events.
  8. Write in a daily or weekly journal about special events or ideas.
  9. Write letters and notes to friends and relatives.
  10. Work on good health habits – eating healthy foods, washing hands thoroughly, brushing teeth often, exercising and resting daily.
  11. Review safety rules frequently – bicycle, water, playground, etc.

The attached sheet is a piece of 2nd grade handwriting paper. You may want to make copies for writing letters, journal entries or practice writing letters from top down.

Have a safe and wonderful summer.

Warmly,

Shantel Niederstadt
