Onekama Consolidated Schools
Mrs. Niederstadt's First Grade

October 5, 2000

Dear Parents,

I am in the process of creating a classroom web page and will continually update it throughout the school year. I hope to have the process completed by Monday. The Internet address is http://www.manistee-isd.k12.mi.us/~sneiders/. The classroom web connects to my e-mail. I read my e-mail daily. This is a great way for us to communicate. If you have an e-mail address, then please send it to me or send it in with your child.

Last Friday we walked to the Onekama Public Library and checked out two books. These books are due on October 20th. You can return them to any Manistee County Public Library or I can return them to the Onekama Public Library for you. You can find pictures of our field trip on the Internet.

We have recently begun a new mathematics unit called Everyday Uses of Numbers. In this unit children will find out about the uses of numbers in real-world contexts. When working at home, encourage the use of appropriate labels or units of measure, such as cents, dogs, books, inches and so on.

Children will also practice memorizing home telephone numbers and other personal numbers such as area codes, addresses and zip codes. Telling time with the hour hand will be covered in this unit. Children will estimate the time of day using the hour hand only. For example, when the hour hand is pointing exactly to the “4,” then the time is “4 o'clock,” When the hour hand is just before or after a number or between two numbers, it is recorded as “before 4 o'clock,” “just after 4 o'clock,” or “between 4 and 5 o'clock.”

Children will review pennies, nickels, dimes, and quarters. In doing so, they will count, write, and express combinations of coins and begin to exchange coins for others of equal value.

On Saturday, October 14th your child is invited to walk in the Homecoming parade with his/her class. It begins at 11:00 a.m. If your child is going to participate in the parade, then please be sure to return his/her permission slip. The permission slips will be sent home next week. We will meet in the Village Park at 10:30 a.m. The Homecoming game is at 1:00 p.m. I am unable to attend, but Mr. and Mrs. Lowe have volunteered to walk with the class. Thanks again!

Please remember that there is no school tomorrow due to a teacher in-service. Have a great weekend.

If you have any questions or concerns at any time, please feel free to stop by the classroom before or after school or call me at (231) 889-9674 ext. 436.

Warmly,

Shantel
