The High School Students Against Tobacco Use made presentations to the 4th and 5th grade classes. Each fifth grader planned and typed a letter to the group thanking them for their presentation, telling what they learned, and outlining their reasons for not smoking. These letters written by the students were sent to the group. (Portions of a few of the letters appear below) Dear High School Group, One reason why I won't smoke is because it's bad for your body and you can die from smoking. There are many sicknesses you can get from smoking like lung cancer and Emphysema and it can also cause harm to unborn babies. I will never start to smoke because when I grow up and have children they will be sad when I die. (That's only if I start smoking, which I never ever will) That is what I think of smoking. ...Amber Dear High School Group,Thank you for coming to our class. It was very nice of you. I'm never going to smoke, because it is not me at all! Kids only smoke because they see their friends smoke, and they think its cool, but it really isn't! Some of my family smoke .I do not like it. Dear High School Group, I chose not to smoke because am too young and I have a whole life in front of me. If I smoke I can't play basketball. I'm too smart to do drugs. If I do them I will get kicked out of school and then I can't go to collage. They cost is a lot. Right now if I don't buy cigarettes, when I am 16 teen I will be able to buy a GMC and a horse trailer. That's why I choose not to do drugs. ...Emily E.
Dear Sarah, I think you and I are too cool to smoke. I would not have the money to smoke. If I bought 1 pack (which I would not) I would be poor. I added the money together and it added up to $1,095.00 a year, that is a lot! I am an A and B student and I don't want to smoke because that would make me dumb. I know that if I smoke I might get yellow fingernails or even DIE! I agree with you, Sarah, you said that you're not going to smoke because you want to play sports. I like sports a lot and in sports you have to run and if you smoke you could not run. It might sound cool to some people but not to us! The first reason why I won't smoke is because when the tar gets stuck in your lungs and windpipe it gives you lung cancer. Then it builds up and causes death. The second reason is cancer. The tar leaves stains in your lungs, which makes it hard to breathe. It also takes up space and there is less room for oxygen to get in and out. The third reason is addiction. The nicotine gives you a craving for more. Then the nicotine makes it a habit for you to smoke. Then you become addicted. Those are my top three reasons why I won't smoke. ...Ginny

With the money you could buy a new car. The second, reason is that you could die. You could die by cancer, and your skin can get wrinkly when you are young. It costs a lot of money to smoke. Any way, you could get cancer. Cancer is one of the worst diseases in the world and if you smoke you're bound to get it. After a while you might even die! Worst of all if you smoke constantly for five years or less you will die. After one year you'll get cancer then it's just pain, but you're so addicted you can't stop.
