Knights of Columbus Spelling Bee

By Katie

On Sunday May 2nd, 1999 there was a spelling bee going on in Manistee. There were 12 kids in 4th, 5th, and 6th grade from Onekama. The schools were Onekama, MCC, Bear Lake, Manistee, and Kennedy. We studied for a long time. How did the people pick the 12 kids? Well, Onekama had a little spelling bee of our own. So, Mr.Finan used the only sheet that we had which was number 1 and 2. When we got to the spelling bee there was 3 more sheets then what we had! So that's all we got. On the lists that we didn't get there were words that I didn't even know! I got out on my 2nd word. It was violence. I think it was easy but it was on the 3rd list, and they put extra pressure on us by having us talk in the microphone and spelling. Plus I was extra nervous. What made me the most nervous is talking in the microphone. At least Ginny Carolson got 4th place for us 5th graders! I bet you that next year I will be in the spelling bee, I bet you! And next year I will have ALL the words to study. ...by Katie

Leah's Visit Back

by Amber and Erin

When Leah E. came back to visit, believe me, I think everybody in our hallway at that time was just there to say hi to Leah. Some people say that since Leah left, Onekama has not been the same. I know that whole time everybody had a smile on their face. When it was time to go back to class everybody just grinned and went to class. I wish that she could just stay here forever because I think she has a good personality and another thing that I liked about her was that she slapped the boys when they were being weird. When Leah came back to visit she was super tan she looked like she was just getting back from Florida after she was living there for five years. Here is a picture of her in the Spelling Bee with the rest of our Spelling Bee people. (she's the one in the orange vest) .....by Amber J.

Leah Edmondson used to be in my class but she left. She used to be my best friend and we used to talk to each other and had a lot of fun. It was pretty sad when she left because the last day that she was here we went on a field trip. When she came back that one time she had been really excited, well that is what people told me because I wasn't even there. I can still remember her though. I wish that she would be here for good but she was only here for one day. Leah Edmondson was my best friend. ..... by Erin W.
