Last week we had a guest speaker come in and told us about the Civil War. The man's name was George Goodrich. He was a reinactor of the Civil War. When he came in he told us about the Civil War, like where it was fought, like in Bull Run. He told us that Abraham Lincoln was the first president to be elected during a war. That was the Civil War. He brought in some guns that they used in the Civil War. He brought in three guns; a musket, a revolver, and a bayonets that was easy to load on a horse. The bullets where usually shaped like a cone. But those only came out of a gun. The ones that come out of a cannon are about 10 pounds and when they get over the enemy they explode so a lot of pieces fly and knock peoples heads off. Then at the end he gave us some stuff they really ate in the Civil War like some Hardtack is really hard and good, and some jerky is black and is really good too. ....Chris P.

Hard-Tack is Chewy

When Mr. Goodrich came to our school he gave us some hard- tack. It even hurt my teeth it was so hard. He said it was the food soldiers had to eat. Only he just baked them the night before he came. Imagine how hard it would be after months! He said it was made with salt, flower, and water. He also brought in some jerky. It was really salt pork, but the soldiers called it jerky. They both were really good. When we switched classes Mrs.Eldridge took pictures of us. I hope that we can have him come again.

When he came that wasn't all he brought. He had a whole bunch of guns, uniforms and other needs. It was really fun and I hope he comes again. ...Jessica K

The Civil War speaker

We all had a wonderful time while Mr. Goodrich came! He is a reinactor for the Civil War. He does great reinactments all over the United states. When he came he talked about many things that happened while he was there. After he got done talking he gave us some of the food that they might have eaten while they were there. It was called hardtack and salt pork (but it was his recipe for jerky). The hardtack was okay but the salt pork was great.

I really liked him coming into our room and showing us all of his guns and ammo. It was really nice of him to come and visit us. Thank you for coming in Mr. Goodrich. ....Erin

Civil War Speaker

On Tuesday, a man named Mr. Goodrich came in and showed us old Civil War things. He did this because he is a Civil War re-enactor. That means that they play out the war again, but nobody gets shot or hurt. Plus he eats old war food that they use to eat. He had old revolvers and rifles. He also brought in hard tack that is like a chewy and tough cracker. He brought something like jerky too. That was good. In rank he is a private. That is the lowest rank. That was his presentation. ... Brenen

Mr. Goodrich gave us Hard Tack

On Tuesday, February 16 my class had a special guest. His name was Mr. Goodrich. He is a Civil War reinactor. He is in a group that goes around to the grounds that the Civil War was fought at. The group goes all around looking under ground for things that might have got buried. He came into our class and gave a great presentation! There were guns and swords that his group found. He had clothes that they used to wear in the war. He shot the cannon ball when they were reinacting. Near the end of the presentation he read us some letters that they found under ground. At the end of the presentation he gave us some hard tack and some jerky (that is what they ate in the Civil War). He said that the soldiers had to eat that all the time. I hope that he comes in again. In the future I hope I can learn more about the Civil War. I think the Civil War is really intresting. I hope that I can maybe see a reinactor in action! ... Nichole

Mr. Goodrich is a reactor. He came to our school on Tuesday, February 1999. He told us about his life as a private soldier first he showed us the suits that they had to wear then he showed us the swords. The sword I liked most was the pointing sword. That's the sword that the captain would use to point were they should go or where they should shoot. After that he showed us some guns and showed us how to load them. At the end he gave us some hard tack and Jerky. (Things they had to eat) ... Amber J.
