Mr. & Mrs. Brooks tell their story.

The many things that they did and how many of their stories were so amazing, I would want to try it out. I mean go and live there for a day. the story that I liked the most was how Mr. Brooks got his milk every morning. It was so amazing learning about our past I didn't really think that it would be that much fun back then, but I guess I was wrong. I wouldn't mind living there myself. ...Erin

On Monday, June 7th a nice couple came into our class. Their last name was Brooks. They talked about their past. They taught us what is was like in the Onekama area when they were younger. They also talked about cost. Like did you know that when Mrs. Brooks was younger a chocolate shake was 15 cents? ...John

They talked about an ice cream man that would come around with a bell and he would have a nail on the side of the cart that he was pushing. He would have ripped paper on the nail. When kids came to him, they paid a penny for a scoop of ice cream on the paper. They called it a penny a lick. It was exciting to have them come in and tell us first hand. ...Chris

My favorite part was when Mr. Brooks talked about the lumber rustlers. The lumber rustlers were people that would go to the lake and they would cut the logs that other lumberjacks had cut. Then when the lumber came through, the lumberjacks didn't get the credit, the rustlers did. ...Kris

They talked about the log rustlers and how they stole logs by sawing off the brand. They also talked about how the farmers were so mad at the miller for making the water rise, and how the farmers made the channel themselves. Mr. Brooks told us about seeing ships go in and out of the channel. Mrs. Brooks told us about school activities. ...Tyler

My favorite thing they talked about was the races they had in school. Mr. Brooks said that when they were in school the desks were arranged in rows. The teacher would call out a problem, and then the people in the first row would race up and see who would get the answer first. Kayla B.

I liked stories, (especially when someone else tells them). One of the stories that Mr. Brooks told us was that a long time ago he was walking home from school and there was a blow hole next to the Portage Point Inn. (A blowhole is where the wind blows around in a circle and forms a hole." In the hole he found some Indian pottery. Now how groovy is that! .... Curtiss

My favorite part was when Mrs. Brooks told us about when she tried to cook. That was really funny, but at least Mr. Brooks' father said nice things to her about it. ...Jessica

It was pretty neat to learn about our community when it was very new. Things were different. There was no TV, but they had radio. They didn't have much electricity. They had out houses. Mrs. Brooks had to cook on a wood stove. ...Jason

Mr. Brooks said the best moment in his life was when he married Mrs. Brooks. Mrs. Brooks said when she was first married they had no electric for cooking so she had to cook on a wood stove. She burned a lot of food. They ate pie that they bought. They didn't have lights so they had to use lanterns and there were a lot of other things she had to adapt to like outhouses. ...Joel

Mr. Brooks wore this suit to third grade. It was his father's suit.

They talked about the kind of games they used to play when they were kids. One of the games was "Whose got the Button". That game is when you have a button. You go to other kids and slide it into other kids hands and then everyone says "button, button who's got the button!" The kid that you gave the button to doesn't say that he's got the button. He pretends that he doesn't have the button. ...Nichole

Mr. Brooks was in high school when Onekama got their first bus. ...Emily E.
