Learning by Experimentation

^Josh K, Kayla F, Jordan, Dustin and Ashley Z attempt to "filter out" particles from various liquid mixtures.

Solutions and Suspensions

When we did that coffee filter thing there were four filters, one big cup and four small cups. The cups were filled with either oil, salt, sugar, or pepper. We put water in each cup and stirred it. We put each thing through a filter. The oil and pepper mostly stayed in the filter paper. The salt and sugar were dissolved in the water. They went right through the filter. The salt and sugar made a solution.....Josh V.

Fingerprints

I learned a lot from the finger print experiment. I learned how to do finger prints so when I get a finger print (I mean a real fingerprint) I will know how to do it. I learned that not all fingers are the same. I learned that even one finger sometimes has a mixture. I learned that your finger prints are the same your whole life. I like doing finger prings. ..Erica S

I learned there are three types of prints called loop, whorl and arch. I also learned that not all the finger prints on my hand are the same. ...Ricky

^Jackson, Nichole, and Erica J are wondering, "Are all black inks the same?"

Fungus

In science we had a project to do. We had to make mold. We took bread, chips, gummy sandwiches and we put our hands all over them. Some people spit on the bread! Then we put them on a plate in a zip lock bag. Some were out by the sun and some were in the dark. We watched them for a couple weeks. The first day there wasn't much mold. By the end of the week there was lots of mold all over the bread and everything. We used a magnifying glass to see it better. A lot of mold was white and some was green and orange. Some was purple. Mike forgot his in his desk and when he found it there was even more mold than before. Mold didn't need sun to grow...by Chris N.

Black Ink

I learned that not all black ink is the same. If you make a black mark on a coffee filter and stick just the tip in water it will make all kinds of colors on the coffee filter. The water seeps up the filter and separates the colors in the black ink. At first I didn't believe it but once I tried it was fun. I showed it to my brothers and they thought it was magic. I could imagine it as anything. I made a pretty one that loked like the sun setting on the beach. It reminded me of when I went to the beach to watch the sun set last summer....Ashley Z.

I liked the marker experiment because it was fun to watch the color change as water went up the filter. I liked Pen A the best because it looked like a fire in the fireplace. The one I did with Pen B was okay because it looked like a cave. Pen C just made a solid purple line all the way up. I tried this at home but it didn't turn out because I had too thin of paper. .....Josh K.

This year we did a project with three black pens labeled A, B, C. We did this project because we wanted to see if all pens were the same. What we did was took coffee filters, cut them in the shape of a arrow, second we drew a line accrost it like this (drawing) and taped the coffee filter to a stick so it looked like this (drawing). And we took a cup filled about half full so the coffee filter tip was touching the water so the water would soak up it. Then the ink would run up the coffee filter and make it change colors like brown, pink, blue, purple. The ink in each pen was different. I use them as book marks. I really had fun doing this project. ...Kayla F

Concentrated & Dilute

I think it was cool to learn that normal, dilute, and concentrated things taste different. We used Kool Aid for our experiment. Dilute didn't have much tast and Concentrated really tasted good. Concentrated had two cups of sugar and two packs of Kool Aid mix. We learned lots of neat things in this experiment like that sugar dissolves. I think science is cool. ...Christopher S

Expansion and Contraction

Ashley J., Sam G., and Ashley B. tried to complete our balloon experiments, however we couldn't get enough hot water. They will have to try again another day.

Sugar Cubes

Dustin, Ashley Z, and I were in a group together. We had to do an experiment with sugar cubes. We were supposed to see if a sugar cube would dissolve faster in hot or cold water. (They dissolved faster in hot water) What I learned was that sugar kind of melts like butter, but it doesn't. It dissolves like Kool Aid. .....Erica J.

I"m writing about the sugar cube experiment. We would get a cup of warm and a cup of cold water. Then we would put one cube in each cup at the same time. We would see which cube would dissolve faster. Then finally we would record the time. I forgot to mention we would use thermometers to see how warm or cold the water was. ...Soren

Kool-Aid Snowflakes

I liked the one when we cut snowflakes out of coffee filters and then dipped the corners of them in kool aid stuff and watched as the stuff soaked up to see the different colors it took to make that color kool aid. The grape kool aid was made of red and blue dye. The blue dye went up the filter farther than the red dye. The orange kool-aid was made of red and yellow dye. ...Kayla M

Static Electricity

Heat and Temperature

I liked when we took a little cup and a big cup and put the same temperature of water in both cups. We put a thermometer in each cup. They were the same to start. After a couple minutes the small container started to cool off. The small one cooled off faster because it had less water. ...Brandon

Concentrated & Dilute

Sam M. picked me to help her do this science experiment. We had to make Kool Aid and there were two other groups. Sam and I made normal Kool Aid like it says on the package. Nichole's group made a dilute solution with half as much sugar and Kool aid powder. Dusty's group made concentrated solution. They used twice as much sugar and powder. Everybody in the room had a cup and we had to pour our Kool aid in the cups so they could find out what Kool Aid they liked. We found out that the dilute did not have much of a taste. Everybody said they liked concentrated the best. It had the most taste. .....by Dustin T
