Lake Effect Snow

Where does all the snow in Michigan come from? Some of the snow is system snow. The other kind of snow is lake effect snow. Lake effect snow is snow made from the Great Lakes and other large bodies of water. When cold air passes over one of the Great Lakes it picks up moisture from the warmer waters of the lake. As this cold, moisture laden air passes over the coast it is lifted by hills and is cooled even more. This lifting and cooling of air is called oragraphic lift. The higher the moist, cool air is lifted the more snow it produces.
