Julie's Page

It really does take a whole school district to educate a child. Julie Miller got a fine start at the Manistee Intermediate School in Sharon Hayden's room. In 1991 Julie was so well prepared she began kindergarten several days a week at Onekama Consolidated School. She continued to gain support from Sharon and others at the ISD.

A full time aide enabled Julie to participate in all activities. Soon it became evident that she wanted to go to Onekama full time in Mrs. Jordan's classroom. She moved on to be full time with second grade teacher, Mrs. Kahl, and then third grade teacher, Mrs. Catanese.

It seemed like a good idea to surround Julie with caring people. And it's not surprising the students led the way. Everyone seemed to know that helping is including, not excluding, and everyone has their own pace. Other classes wait for their special time with Julie and Mrs. Van.

Now that Julie is back at the Onekama Campus, as a full time student with Mrs. Brown and her fourth grade, she still looks forward to visiting Arcadia Elementary --Mrs. Kahl's second graders greet Julie as a friend from first grade who visited once in a while.

In September 1998, Julie and her class entered Mrs. Eldridge's fifth grade. Everyone continues to cooperate and learn.

Being a fourth grader, Julie also has the help and support of many of her fellow students. During the past few weeks, these comments were heard in Mrs. Brown's classroom.

Andrea K.: I like helping Julie to say words. She can say lots of things I ask her to say.

Katie R.: I like to give Julie treats, especially at lunch. She is sweet and fun to be my friend.

Curtiss O.S.: Julie likes music. So do I.

Colin G.: I like having Julie in my class. She learns from us. I missed not having her in my class last year. I was in Ms Mason's and Julie was in Mrs. Catanese's.

Emily B.: I like to help Julie learn new things.

Mandy G.: I'm glad Julie likes the books I gave her. They were my old story books from when I was little.

As you can see by these comments, Julie is considered a fellow classmate and friend. The students really do help her to learn, and they also learn from her. Their kindness and support is wonderful. Children you would least expect this from are sometimes the most caring. It is certainly a pleasure to see them be Julie's friend. They have learned so much by being her friend and helper, and she has learned from them.
