Stacey and Kayla share an interest in horses. It wasn't surprising that they chose to make their HyperStudio presentation on this topic. The girls used many of their own drawings. They gathered information from the encyclopedia and from personal experience.

" I think Hyper Studio is a lot of fun. I enjoy making my own pages. I also like to add sound and draw pictures. I am nervous about presenting mine to the group, though. I hope people like it. Lots of people have given me good comments so far. I still have about 10 more cards to make before I am done." ...Samantha G

"I can hardly wait to see what everybody's project is like. It is so much fun, but it is hard sometimes. Then you learn how to do it. I think I will do something even harder next time. " ...Erica

Chris S., Scott, and Soren had been working several days on their presentation "How Drugs Harm Us" when they became the first to discover how to make animations. The boys worked well together.

"I think Hyper Studio is cool! It lets you play sounds, do animations, and so on. It is neat because it is on a computer. With Hyper Studio you can let other people know what you know." ...Chris S.

"I really like HyperStudio because it's almost like making your own computer program with all of the things you can do with it. It is one of my favorite programs. You can almost make anything on it from projects to making things just for fun. It's really cool."

" I think it was so much fun to do HyperStudio. I can't wait until we get to do another one. I did this one by myself. I think it would be more fun if I worked with another person. I caught on really fast." ......Mary Lynn

"The only hard thing about Hyper Studio is that you have to make a lot of decisions. And when you make a mistake it is hard to change. But it is pretty fun." ....Josh

Jade and Sarah wrote about their common love: Labrador Retrievers. The girls each borrowed the camera and brought back images of their dogs. They looked up information on how to care for their pets.

"I like Hyper Studio a lot. It is really fun. I wish I had it on my computer at home. Thanks for letting us use the program and the camera!! It would be fun to do another project." ...Jade B.

Jackson and Brandon wrote about the dangers of swimming in fresh and salt water. They included numerous interesting animations and sound effects to add humor to their presentation.

"I loved making a Hyper Studio project. It was really fun. I liked drawing, making sound, and making pictures. Thanks for letting us do that project." ....Jackson C.

"Hyper Studio is so much fun. I enjoyed it. Some things were complicated but it got easier. I would do HyperStudio again anytime. We'll have to bring in baby pictures and make a program like the fifth grade did last year. If we could do that it would be fun." ...Ashley B

"I think HyperStudio was fun. We learned a lot about our project. I did mine on gunniea pigs because I have two of them. I love them. That's why I thought people would be interested too. I had a lot of fun." ...Kayla F.

Erica S. and Nichole decided to make a presentation on the stages in the development of a baby. Luckily Nichole's mom had a nursing book for them to borrow. The girls drew all their own images and used sound to tell the story.

"I really like Hyper Studio. I think it is really fun and I would like to do it again in the future. It is really fun to gather up information from books and then put the information on the computer. Drawing is fun too." ..... Erica J.

"I think the best part was making butons, especially invisible ones. The hardest part was drawing pictures. But it was all fun."...Sam M

Mrs. Eldridge Comments: Most of the fifth graders have finished their first Hyper Studio Program. Our only "hitch" this year was that we were running out of memory on the computers available. This was not a problem last year, but the addition of digital images taxed our current system. (May 1998)

Adding the digital images was a great success. Ten students borrowed the camera overnight and returned it with their own personal images. (We hope to continue letting them borrow the camera.) We were able to download each child's images and put them in the student's personal "At Ease" folder. From there the student would be able to access the images for use in HyperStudio or word processing programs. The problem came when the students tried to use the images on our LC III computers. The available 8 Mb of RAM was not enough to allow this activity. The few computers with more memory became very popular.

Mrs. Eldridge Comments: UPDATE! Wonderful news for HyperStudio users. When the students arrived for the 1998-1999 year they were impressed to find a 26 Macintosh G3 Lab, plus each classroom had at least one G3. These machines do it all!

Mrs. Eldridge Comments: This year more students wanted to add sound to their presentations. We only had a half dozen computers that could handle this. To signal others that they wanted QUIET, a group would yell out "Recording", before proceeding to record their message. There was a great deal to learn about recording, for instance they needed to name each "sound bite" by a different name. There were many funny moments before we all learned that trick!

Presenting their HyperStudio project to the entire class was done with the LCD Panel and Overhead projector located in our classroom. The students were very receptive to each other's presentation. The comments made were almost all constructive. Presenters were able to go back to the computer and make any needed corrections. See Students Making Presentations (June 1998)
