We Use the School Forest To Learn

Tree Circumference Activity

Rachel and Lucille are measuring the circumference of an aspen tree at a point one meter above ground level. This data will be compiled with that of other groups. Students will then tabulate the mean, median, and mode of the data. Further activities will determine if there is a correlation between tree circumference and soil types. All aspen on the school forest is the same age.

Onekama Consolidated Schools is blessed with four parcels of school forest property. This particular parcel is unusual in that it is an 80 acre piece of property made up of about 1/3 planted pines, 1/3 aspen and 1/3 swamp that drains into Bear Lake, a part of the Lake Michigan watershed. Most school forests are made up of row upon row of planted pine trees.
