The Legend

In the 1988-1989 school year, the First Grade Class at Onekama Elementary designed and built a castle. During the year, a storyline was developed into a play. "The Legend of Amakeno" was written and performed for parents and friends. As third graders in Mrs. Catanese's class another chapter--Act II--was developed. Once again we were transported to the magic of Amakeno.

The Legend continues this year as Room 438 returns to find this mysterious and elusive Castle. This year's first graders have discovered the Legend and with the help of twins, Jack and Rosie, may indeed find their way to the Castle. FIRST--BEGIN THE JOURNEY was the message discovered along with the directions to find the children. The class quickly decided they were the children. Each has something special to help the twins along the way.

December 1997: Our "full size" castle has been built and is a
very popular addition to our classroom.

^Brenna, Ashley and Zac all worked on the castle and are happy with the results.

We made this castle. It's a good castle, and we like this castle. The outside is done. The inside isn't, but we're thinking about it. ... written by the first grade castle builders.

<Andria, Courtney and Ashley are really serious about Guarding the Castle.

Updated May 6, 1998

On Tuesday, April 28, 1998 we were enchanted as we watched the Mad Cap Players at the Ramsdell Theatre. After watching Snow White (starring our own Mrs. Bromley) the audience voted and were treated to Aladdin.

These fine actors challenged us to finish a story they had started. It began something like...."The children found a door. They knocked.".....

We continued our story to the right and will be submitting it to the Mad Cap Players. We hope they will enjoy our ending as much as we enjoyed their performance.

"The children found a door. They knocked. The door opened up from the wind. A witch came out and grabbed Jack. Jill fainted and the witch grabbed her feet and took her in. Inside the tree the witch made a fire to make a potion. Jack was feeling awful sad and sick. Jill still feeling dizzy, tried to find a way out. "Jack, help me find the door." There were lots of doors but they were locked and hidden.

"Look for the key," said Jack. Feeling the walls for cracks they noticed that some parts were smooth and some were bumpy. Meanwhile the witch was out getting ingredients for the potion. She wanted mushrooms, oatmeal, slime mix, socks, hair from a dog, poison ivy plants and feathers. She found everything but the bugs. Since the bats had eaten all the bugs she was angry and mad. She needed BUGS. Suddenly Jack and Jill found one crack. And it was a key hole. But where was the key? ZOOOOM a bad suddenly appeared and gave a key to Jill and Jack, and disappeared. Quickly they put the key into the key hole. The witch saw them but she couldn't get to them. They ran to some water and splashed the witch who melted and stunk a lot. But they were safe."
