February is Dental Health Month and DK has been brushing up on how to take care of their teeth. They've learned about plaque and how it causes acid if they don't brush daily. Acid will cause tooth decay. "If we get holes in our big teeth and they fall out, we won't get any new ones," states Ashlie. We're keeping a daily record of who is brushing and flossing. By brushing in the morning, they earn a sticker for their toothbrush chart.

Ashlie, Crystal and Latasha show their Toothbrush Charts

The class has learned that while we sleep plaque forms to our teeth. We set up an experiment to visualize this concept. Pretending that white eggs were our teeth and pop was plaque, we soaked the eggs in the pop overnight. The next day the eggs were a brown color. How do you get the plaque off your teeth? By brushing. The students practiced their brushing techniques on the eggs. With a bit of toothpaste, they brushed their "teeth" clean again.

The DK class took a field trip to Dr. Berard's Dentist Office in Manistee. Look at our pictures!

Keep Brushing, Crystal!

Good Job, Nathan!

Students can practice proper brushing and flossing in the classroom on a big set of teeth. Above, Alan and Nathan demonstrate how to brush and floss really big teeth.
