What is DK?

by Mrs. Veryser

Many people ask me "What exactly is D.K.?" D.K. is very similar to kindergarten, but it is for a child who is not quite ready for kindergarten. We do a lot of the same things, but at a slower pace and more with individualized attention. There are only seven students in my class, which allows us to do a lot of hands on activities. My students have all the same specials as the other grades (P.E., music, art, library, computers), but dismiss at 1:00 p.m. with a chauffeured ride home in the school suburban.

Some of the things we have been working on are letters, numbers, and colors. One of their favorite activities is writing in shaving cream. I put shaving cream on their desks and we practice making letters and numbers. The kids just love it!

We are always making art projects and decorating the hallway. Recently the students stayed all day so they could participate in the school's Halloween parade. After, we had our party with Mrs. Bromley's kindergarten class. The students were able to listen to a storyteller, play games, and eat many treats. It was a treat to have them all day and they liked staying, too.

Through the rest of the year we will continue to learn the letters and sounds, numbers, shapes, and more. It will be fun to watch them grow and look back on how much they have progressed. I am trying to prepare them for a very successful year in Kindergarten.

Latasha and Todd are working on their morning handwriting paper.

Calendar is part of our daily routine. Some of the things we do are: determine the weather and dress Mr. Bear accordingly, practice counting, and add to our growing number line. Jeremy is dressing Mr. Bear in warm clothing.

Nathan is using his math skills by finding how many "feet" long Ashlie is.

Alan is finding how many "hands" it takes to measure his table.

Ashlie and Nathan are using the computer in our classroom.

The D.K. class loves going to computer class once a week. They also like working on the computer in the classroom. Here are some of their quotes.

Crystal F:My favorite is making my name.

Alan B: I like playing games.

Ashlie M: I like going through the maze.

Nathan F.: I like playing the cat with the red hat.

Latasha R: I like drawing pictures and getting them out of the computer. (printing)

Jeremy S:I like the matching house.

Todd C: I like all of the computers.

Alan and Jeremy built castles with the blocks. Then they measured them with the yard sticks

We started working with money in D.K.. The students can identify a penny, nickel, dime, quarter, and dollar. During "choice time" they may practice their money skills by matching the coins with the ones in the egg carton. Latasha is showing where the quarter goes.

The class is rewarded with stickers that go in their sticker books. When they do well on their morning papers, listen well, or really try at an activity, they can earn a sticker. Crystal shows some of the stickers she has earned.
