Using
CuteFTP We
ran into a snag trying to launch with the Windows98
"web publishing wizard". We are now trying Cute
FTP. It has done a great job. An advantage is you can
reload an individual page if you make changes. I'll write
better directions after I read the manual, in the
meantime, here's what I do.
- Click on the CuteFTP
alias on your desktop (or find it in Programs)
- It has been set up to
automatically connect you to the ISD server in
the sky. It will let you know when you have been
connected. (If I didn't set it up right, let me
know)
- You will see your
personal "server in the sky" spot in
the right hand window of
CuteFTP
- Open
"public_html". This is where your pages
belong.
- In the left
hand window, you will navigate to the place on
your hard drive where you keep your web.
Most of you are keeping it in
C:\Webshare\Wwwroot\webname This is an
individual choice.
- Open the folder that
holds your web and you should see all the parts
of your web. Many of these are folders which were
automatically created by FrontPage98.
- Click and drag all
files and folders from the left hand window to
the right hand window (in other words you are
asking Cute FTP to send them to the sky for you.)
Do not send up any folders that begin with
_vti.
- You can select more
than one folder or file at a time by using
"shift&click". Then drag them all
at once.
- Loading folders takes
several minutes. --pages and photos go quickly.
- Later we will worry
about setting "permission". This is
important, I just am not sure which way we should
go. On my own webs all pages are marked
Owner:read write , Group&World:read. This
setting of attributes is found under
Commands>Advanced>file attributes and we
need to get to it fairly soon.
- Quit
- Go to your web browser
and check to see if your pages made it.
- If not, do not panic.
(ha) E-mail or phone me. It is probably some
simple problem.
- Oh, yes, if you are
adding a page which you changed, you may need to
hit "refresh" or reload in your web
browser before you see what was newly added.
(this has to do with the old page being held in
cache)
