Our NetGap Visitor:
Mr. Herb Schimke

Today Mr. Schimke came into our class for Net Gap. He is in his late 70's and he told us how when he was a child that he would work on the farm and sometimes his dad would give him a dollar. With the dollar he could do many things. He could fill up his car with gas, pick up his girl friend, take her to the movie and buy her popcorn and still have change left. That is amazing compared to the prices now. I think Mr. Schimke was very interesting. I hope he comes back again. ....Stephanie

Michael ran the camcorder. The tape will be used by high schoolers. They will type what Mr. Schimke said. Amber and Travis took pictures with the digital cameras. Trevor used a regular camera that has film. Marlee and T.J. greeted Mr. Schimke. Jordan and Nick served punch and cookies.

Today a man named Mr. Schimke came to talk to us. He talked about a lot of things that happened in the past. I learned a lot today, like he is my 4th cousin. One of the things I enjoyed most is when he plowed the fields and rode his neighbor's horse. He had to plow fields because his dad hurt himself. They didn't have tractors back then. The used horses. When he was riding his neighbor's horse, he fell off and the horse ran over him and he knocked in 2 or 3 ribs. I liked talking to him. I hope he comes again. ...Kelli

Mr. Schimke played 1st B Flat coronet when he was young. He can't play it any more because he smashed his lips when he fell.
After the war he started a business at the bottom of our school hill. When he closed it he had state licenses as a master plumber and electrician. Mr. Schimke is a really great guy. ...Tim

Today Mr. Schimke came and talked about the things they did for fun in their extra time and that they didn't have much extra time. They had to finish chores before they could have fun. The stuff they did for fun then was roller skating, fishing or making stuff. ...Trevor

Today Mr. Schimke told us his oral history. He told us about World War II that he was in. He said radar could detect things many miles away. He had a very important job. ...Chris

Mr. Schimke said that Onekama had more buildings back when he was young. Before he left he showed us his pictures. One winter they had a lot more snow that we get now. ...Jordan

Mr. Schimke was very interesting to talk to. He was in track in the seventh and eighth grade and he was the star in the high jump and relays. He said when he was in high school his friend wanted to go to the basketball games but they didn't have the money, so they became the first two boy cheerleaders.
He took Latin in high school. I thought that was neat because my brother and sister do to. I enjoyed his visit very much. ...Katherine
