Onekama Fifth Graders, along with the rest of Onekama school, are preparing for a fund raiser. Ms. Woolman is helping elementary students tie dye shirts. Later this year the shirts will be shared at the Sharing Soup and Hope Dinner.

A good thing we did this year was to tie dye shirts to raise money for the Uganda orphans. We made these things because we want to help the people who are less fortunate. We are going to have a soup dinner and let the public come and eat with us. I like working for people who are less fortunate because it makes me feel very good inside. ...Brandon

Ms. Woolman gave us directions. When she was done telling the directions we got to work. We folded the shirts and put on rubber bands so they would stay on. Then we dipped it in two different kinds of dye. The last thing we did was rinse it and hang it to dry. ...Evan

I really like this web page on tie dye shirts. No offense to Nicholas, but his shirt reminded me somewhat of a cow. His will probably turn out really neat. If you decide to buy a shirt from our class, you shouldn't have any trouble finding them; they're all sunset-like in color. The main purpose of this program is to raise money for Uganda orphans, and I think we should be able to raise at least $500. I would really like it if we could tie dye again around the end of the year if we are lucky enough to have an end-of-the-year party. You know one with games, movies, some time on the computer and of course Mrs. Campbell and Mrs. Brown come too! ...From an e-mail sent to Mrs. Eldridge by Tim

Last week all of the students in Onekama school were tie dying t-shirts in art class for the Uganda orphans. There was a big bucket of dye. Ms. Woolman called two people up at a time to dye their shirts. After we dyed we took them over to a sink and washed off the extra dye. Then we put them in a little container and carried them to a clothes line and hung them up to dry for a couple days. Later people can come to the school and buy the shirts and have some dinner and all the money will go to help the Uganda orphans. ...Ryan K.

I liked the tie dye class we had in art. It was really fun. The shirts changed colors when we dipped them in the dye. I never did a tie dye before. We made them for a charity. They are cool. ...Zack

Mrs. Eldridge's class used orange and like a purple color. My class (Mr. Finan's class) used blue and yellow. I'm glad that we got those colors. The fourth grade shirts were nice too. It was a lot of fun. ...Haley D

We like doing a fund raiser for the Uganda Orphans. We are tie dying t-shirts for a soup dinner. The money goes to orphans. Tie dying is fun, especially when it is going to help kids in another country....Justin

The Uganda Orphans Project is a part of Onekama Schools' commitment to service learning with the goal of helping our student think beyond themselves to the needs of others. We would like to develop an interest in contributing to the global community.
