Dear, Christie Bleck

I like the magazine TRACKS that you publish and write. I think that it teaches kids about saving the forest and helping animals. It also tells kids to not pollute and destroy our forests. The magazine also tells about our own community like our own Michigan pheasant and the trees. You also tell about the animals that go dormant and the ones that migrate like the geese. In the pheasant one,I liked to read the hunting section and the fly fishing area too. My friend didn't approve of the dishes and game birds because he doesn't like killing them.
I think that you should keep writing this even if some one tells you to stop. So I think you should do this and keep doing a good job at it. Now the next thing you should write about is elk or bear or even wolves because people don't now much about them that's why.
Sincerely,
Tayler

Dear Christie Bleck,
I liked the one Tracks with the forest topic. I never knew that trees had so many layers of bark! Forests are beautiful things that should be preserved and not bulldozed for roads and highways. And I didn't know how to identify most trees by their leaves. So thanks for publishing that one. I know I'll like the next ones.
On the opening day of deer season my dad and I bagged a five point buck. The first thing we did was get our orange on and my dad loaded his gun. Next we walked off into my friend's field and then we walked off into the woods. When we walked into the woods I noticed some droppings. My dad said that some does made them. Next we went to an old antique car that we used as a blind. Then we did some more walking and crossed a barb wire fence and continued down a hill and back into the field. That's when I noticed a rubbed up tree and a pond and that's were I went in that area and gestured to my dad but he didn't go so I went back up to him but, he told me to go where I was going. So I did. That's when I heard a gunshot and I know the sound of my dad's gun so I knew it was him shooting. I went back up to him for the last time and saw he got a buck. When he went to make sure it was dead he gave me his knife. " A lot of good this is going to do against that buck!" I thought. But luckily I didn't need to use it my dad shot it again and he got the car and we brought it home. All this happened between 10:30 and 11:00.
Sincerely,
Timothy

Dear Christie Bleck,
I like reading your tracks magazine. They are a lot of fun to read. It teaches me about animals and plants. Like the ring-necked pheasant and white pine. The female pheasant is about 21 to 25 inches long and males are 30 to 36 inches long. They eat plants grains acorns and berries. People hunt them sometimes just for fun some for food. I heard they are good to eat even thew I've never tried one. I think they are very neat birds.
I have a small forest in the back of my house. The first time I was in it, Sherry, one of mom's friends, and I had to pick up all the glass, tires and other things. A few things were bigger then me like the refrigerator. When we were done the woods looked nice. We cleaned up the woods because we were going to put up a wire fence for the black pony. We were going to take care of the black pony when everything was done. After we were done and the horse got there James and I rode the horse. We were happy for cleaning the woods.
Sincerely,
Anne Agle

Letters to Tracks Magazine

Dear Christie Bleck,

I like Tracks magazine because it gives you a lot of facts about wild life. We read tracks for science. I liked the one on pheasants. My family has a permit so we raise pheasants from spring to fall. In fall we release them into the woods by our house. There aren't many around my house so were trying to bring them back.

I like pheasants because they are beautiful birds. There green head, gold body, & white ring really makes them look cool.

Sincerely yours,

Justin

Teacher Note: Although only a few letters and graphics are shown here, all fifth grade students wrote to Tracks magazine and inserted a graphic. Christopher and T.J. drew their deer on paper and colored it with crayons. After I scanned it, I put the copies in their folders. They inserted it into their letters. Anne, Tayler, and Justin made their drawings in the Kid Pix computer program. They saved their art and inserted it in their letters.
Our fifth grade language class meets daily in the Macontosh computer Lab. We use the word processing program, Microsoft Word.
