While traveling the Oregon Trail, Mrs. Lyman helped the emigrants make beadwork. Many used their imagination to write about the event.

Yesterday we made beadwork with an Indian woman. She made a bib like thing for my son and a doll for my daughter. Then she took some beautiful beads and made me a necklace. My wife learned how to make beadwork too. She made all kinds of stuff and sold it for $5 a necklace. Now that we have more money, I think that we will get a better house when we get to Oregon. It was good learning to do beadwork. I made a snake and gave it to a little boy. He thanked me a lot for it. ...Tayler R.

Today we found some left over beads that some Indians had dropped from when they were making beadwork. We tried to make some things with the extra string that we had, but it did not turn out so well. But it gave us something to do for a few more miles until we get to the new campsite. ...Lance on the Oregon Trail

We have stopped the wagon to make beads. I made a snake. It was hard. I thought I would not make one, but I did. I thought I would not get mine done fast, but I did. Hunter helped me and that is how I got done so fast. ...T.J.

A couple days ago we made beads with Mrs. Lyman. There were many kinds of things you could make such as dragon flies, snakes and lizards. We had a lot of fun. Todd has made these things before so he helped Lance and me. I hope we do this again some time. ...Brandon
