Dissection of a Pig's Heart by Mr. Neph's 8th Grade Science Students

On Thursday we got to dissect pig hearts. I think it was really fun. We were put into groups and we got to feel around the hearts. I got to cut one of the hearts open split down the middle and look in it. I think it was fun seeing everything that is in a heart and seeing what it looks like. In short, it was a great experience.

Yesterday on January 3, 2013 Helen Johnson brought in pig hearts for us to dissect. I was a little grossed out by it so I just watched and took pictures. Everyone who dissected a heart had to wear gowns and gloves. She also taught us about the hearts before we actually started. The left side of the heart has a bigger muscle because it has to pump all the blood through the body. Towards the end the hearts started to smell a little bit. Overall, it was a fun and interesting day. ~Kelly Hall

On January 3, the class of 2017 dissected pig hearts. I thought it was really fun. We used scalpels to cut them. At first we were carful cutting it but after that we just cut it everywhere.  We cut off the valves and other stuff. We got to put our fingers in throughout the pig heart. Helen said that a pig heart is the closest thing to a human heart. She also said that they sometimes use pig hearts in human heart transplants. I had a really fun time that day! ~Kassidy Ward

Yesterday in science we got to dissect pig hearts. Lauryn's mom brought them in. It was really disgusting but it was really fun! I was really grossed out in the beginning because they just smelled so bad. But then I got into it and it was really interesting. We looked at all of the different muscles, valves, and veins. The left side was a lot thicker in muscle than the right side because it pumps more blood. Yesterday was so much fun! ~Kiara Bromley

On January 3,2013 Helen Johnson came to our class and taught us about pig hearts. Helen brought pig hearts for us to dissect. We had to put on gowns and gloves. Then the people that wanted to dissect the pig hearts got to dissect them. At first we cut them open so we could see the valves and the other stuff inside the hearts. Then we just started cutting them all over the place. Once they were all cut up we looked at the different things that we cut up. I learned a lot about pig hearts. Overall, it was a fun day. ~Michele Haske

On Thursday we had a special guest. Mrs. Johnson came in and had our class dissect pig hearts. It was DISGUSTING. It wasn't so bad until people started cutting them up. I was taking pictures and it was disgusting when the smell started coming out of the hearts. Later, the room smelled horrible. It was kind of cool. ~Kyle Peterson

On January 3,2013 Helen Johnson came to our class and taught us about pig hearts. We had to put gowns on and gloves too. We looked really big in them. After that we got a scalpel and started cutting the heart open. We destroyed the hearts. It was a really fun class. ~Grace Hughes

Yesterday the 8th grade took part in dissecting pig hearts. I really didn't take part in it because it made me queasy. Most of the participants seemed like they were having fun, but i wasn't really paying attention. I still probably wont participate next time. All the insides made me sick and i really didn't have a fun time. ~Austin Sovereign

Yesterday Helen Johnson came in to the eighth grade science class with a bag of pig hearts. She told us that pig hearts are very similar to human hearts and are sometimes used to repair or replace a human heart. She brought out the four pig hearts ad put them onto four different tables. She then had twelve students come up and put on hospital surgery gowns. She directed them to then tables and gave each table a scalpel. The students then dissected the hearts into pieces and tried to identify each part of the heart. I didn't participate in the cutting because I wasn't feeling very good and it made me sick. We had a lot of fun in science class on January 3rd, 2013. ~ Tighe Pepera

On Thursday we dissected pig hearts. It was very fun! even though i was very nervous, since it was very new! it was very fun experience and i hope we do this again. I thank Mrs. Johnson very much for letting us do this! She even told us some stories about working at the hospital. I give thanks to the people who set it up. ~Tanner Hearit

On January 3, 2013 we had a special guest come in to help us with an experiment. We got to dissect a pig heart. It was very fun. I used one of the hearts as a finger puppet. I wish we could do this every day. ~Jacob Fitch

The pig heart dissection was so fun, it was a very good break from the book work! I think its safe to say that the entire class had a blast! It really was the most fun I have had In a while in science class (sorry Mr. Neph). My favorite part of the dissection was the valves on top. It was very interesting to see how the left side developed as a muscle and how the right side wasn't very muscly. Why that is, is because the right side doesn't have very far to pump but the left side has to pump from the toes to the head. When I started pulling out the blood clots Mercedes started to gag, soon after she quit. After tanner chopped up most of the heart I picked it up and plopped it on table then Kassie joined us. It was very fun! Thank you Mr. Neph ~ Quinn LaMont

So Mrs. Johnson brought in  4 pigs hearts! We got split up into 4 groups for 4 hearts. My group was Matt, Me, Coco, and Grace. So we got our smocks on and our purple gloves(:. She gave every group a heart. When i got my heart it was still a little frozen. She said we couldnt cut it open yet but we cud touch it and look at it. So we did. Then the fun part came. We finally got to cut it open and dissect it. I almost made Matt throw up:O ha he turned pale n green! ..so i cut it open and looked at all the vessels and vains n meat inside the heart. I kinda started to get a little hungry!:p hah. There was nasty blood clots in it! but it was still squishy and fun..i think it wudve been way more better if they had a lot of blood ha im kinda  a physco!(; anywho it was fun and it was raining pig hearts halilujah it was raining pig hearts!:) hahahaha  ~Coral Tengdin

Yesterday was January 3 and we dissected pig hearts. My mom came in to help us dissect them. To dissect the pig hearts we had to wear gloves and gowns. The room smelled like beef jerky and raw meat from the hearts. In our pig heart we found big blood clots. We used scalpels to cut the hearts. A pig heart is the closest thing to a human heart. We had a lot of fun dissecting the hearts, you could not even tell it was a heart we cut it up so much. It was really cool dissecting pig hearts. I hope we can do something like this again. ~Lauryn Johnson
