The young Portagers are off to a
strong start, racking up 362 yds offensively, while holding their
opponent to only 45 yards of forward progress. Behind that explosive
frontline and tenacious defense, they posted a final winning score of
54-0 over the Brethren Bobcats. Quinn Matthews set the temple for the
game when he ran the opening kick off 80 yards for the first of his
three TD's, Jacob Florin converted the PA. After a strong defense stand,
the young Portagers got the ball back on downs and on their first
offense play, Florin busted through the line and scampered 42 yards for
the second TD and Matthews added the PA. After another great kick by
Marcus Lovell and a strong defensive effort, the offense took over again
and before the 1st QTR ended, with some excellent blocking for the
offensive line Matthews took one up the middle for another TD and Reckow
added the PA.
The 2nd QTR looked a lot like the
first, Logan Fogarty took over the reins at QB and led the team down the
field on their first series for another score, when Josh Santa took the
hand off and busted free for a 8yd TD run, Austin Greiner added the PA.
The Portagers added another score before halftime, when Reckow ran a QB
keeper 22 yds for a TD and with the successful PA the score was 40-0. |
With a running clock in the 2nd half
the Portagers elected to get some practice on their air game… it didn't
take long, Reckow connected with Matthews on his first pass for a 35yd
TD, the PA was unsuccessful. Florin kept the heat on the Bobcats in the
3rd QTR when he broke free for another big run of 43yds for his second
TD and Matthews converted the PA. That final run by Florin gave him a
total of 147 rushing yards on just 6 carries… pretty impressive!
Defensively the Portagers were
invincible, giving up only two first downs and recovering two fumbles
(one by Keifer Brewer and one by Brandon Beckstein). Fogarty also
stopped another potential drive by the Bobcats with a late 4th QTR
interception. Florin led the defense with 13 tackles, followed closely
by Santa and Josh Jacobs with 9 stops each.
Next game will be at Manistee
Catholic Central at 6:00 on Wednesday, September 17th… hope to see
everyone there!
