their league rivals Manistee Catholic Central, Baldwin and Brethren.
Their undefeated season included this win, plus an earlier 56-14 win

posting winning scores of 54-0 and 62-0. Their closet challenge came
from the MCC Sabers, where the final scores were 16-0 and 16-6
respectfully. For the record, the second Saber home victory was the
first Portager football win under the new lights at Onekama.
Based on an unanimous team vote, the
backfield tandem of Jacob Florian and Quinn Matthews were selected as
Most Valuable Players, both were presented game balls that were signed
by the team. At his Linebacker spot, Florian led the defense with 65
tackles, the majority of those being in the opponents backfield. On
offense, Florian ran at RB and finished the season with 6 TD's and had 7
successful conversions and gained 526 yards on the ground. At the other
RB spot, Quinn Matthews led the Portagers scoring attack with 19 TD's
and added 4 conversions to the scoreboard, Matthews ended the season
with 585 rushing yards and returned three kick/punts for TD's. At his DB
position on defensive, Matthews had 35 tackles and 3 pass interceptions.
Both players, were honored with the recognition, but they both
acknowledged that it a team effort and the undefeated season met more to
them then the MVP award. A special thanks go out to their offensive
line, made up of Joe Eno, Josh Jacobs, Austin Greiner, Marcus Lovell,
Josh Santa, John Curtin, Keifer Brewer, Brandon Bohannon and the lead
blocking back, Logan Fogarty.

QB Bryce Reckow finished the season
with 4 TD passes and 2 running TD's and was on both passing and running
end of numerous conversions. On the other side of the ball, LB's Santa
and Jacobs added 51 and 40 takedowns respectfully to the tackle chart.
Along with these two, Eno and Fogarty also contributed to the defensive
surge with a combined total of 50 tackles, followed close behind by
Greiner who ended the season with 23 and 2 pass interceptions for TD's
and Lovell with 23 solos. The Portager coaches stated that this was one
of the better squads they had ever coached, and even though many of them
will be moving up next year, they hopefully look forward to seeing them
playing at the varsity level in the very near future. |
