Dear soldier,

I am Truman. I am 12 years old, but tomorrow I will be 13. It’s funny that my birthday is exactly one week from Halloween, and my sister’s birthday is one week before Christmas. I live in Onekama; Onekama is pretty close to Manistee. I love watching WWE Wrestling. Do you like the WWE? My favorite wrestler is the Undertaker. Today I sent some flyers to send some supplies to you guys. I am going to send whoopee cushions and Pepto-Bismol.

What is your rank in the army? What do you like to do in your free time? Do you have any friends with you over there? Where did you live before you went to the war? Where are you at in Iraq? Have you seen any action? What do you do in battle if you have been in battle? Do you like pie? Please write back because I would love to find out the answers to my questions.

Thank you for being over there for us. Do you know what Core Democratic Value you are enhancing? It’s Patriotism! You are a real hero. Thank you.

Regards,

Truman, grade 7

Dear Soldier,

Hi, my name is Jennica. I go to Onekama Middle School, I am 12 years old. I spend most of my time playing basketball, softball, playing with my animals, volleyball, hang with my family, and much more. I have 29 deer, 16 goats, 18 chickens, 2 dogs, 1 cat, and 32 pheasants, 3 rabbits, I have no siblings. I am an only child but have many animals I call mine. I enjoy swimming, biking, and much more. My favorite classes are SS, math, and shop. That is just a little about me.

Ok now on to you. Is it scary over there? When is it the scariest? When you go to bed, or what? What is it like over there? Where are you from? Do you have any kids? Do you miss being in the US? How old are you? What do you do in your spare time? What are you hobbies, besides war? What is your job in the war? Is it hard to do your job? How much time do you have to spare?

Thank you, thank you, and thank you. I can not thank you men and women enough to be doing what you are doing over there. A core democratic value that you showed to our country is patriotism. Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Jennica, Grade 7

Mrs. Ramsey’s 7th grade students have been studying how the Core Democratic Values were enhanced and violated throughout the Historical Geography of Europe. We have applied this knowledge to the Patriotism shown by our troops serving overseas. We have adopted the cause of the Hooligans, the name of a unit in Iraq , as seen on 9 & 10 News. Elizabeth McDaniels, from Grayling, is creating care packages for her husband's unit. We would like to help  by providing some items they need.

Dear soldier,

Hello my name is Rubee and I’m 12 years old. I like playing basketball but basketball season ended last week. We won first place. When I’m playing basketball I’m hanging out with my friends. I have no brothers or sisters I’m the only child, but my cousins live right by me so there kind of like having brothers and sisters.

Do you like being over there? Do you ever miss your family? I know I would miss my family. What do you do on your spare time if you have any? Did you make any new friends over there? Is it hot there? What do you use for shade?

Thank you for fighting for us and being brave for your country, and for every thing you love like your family, friends and neighbors. Well that’s all I have to say.

Sincerely,
Rubee M. grade 7

Dear Soldier,

Hi my name is Jaylee. I am also 12 years old and in 7th grade. I live in Onekama, and I live on a big hill with one brother now because my other brother is in college. I have animals and they are a dog, cat, and also a horse. They are all really fun to play with and if nobody’s around they keep me company. Do you have any brothers, animals or older or younger siblings? I play lots of sports. They are basketball, volleyball, track, cross country, and I also go snowboarding. Do you do those sports? Do you like to snowboard or ski? I also do lots of things with my family like snowmobiling, running at home or in road races, and we also love to fish/ice fish. What do you do with your family for fun??? I love to hang out with all my friends when ever I can because I never want to lose them. On your spare time with your friends what do you do? When you come home what do you like to do (hobby)?

Well thank you soooo much for what you’re doing for our country it’s very thoughtful of you. Thank you for enhancing your patriotism by giving up your time for being in the war for us all of us. Thank you! I hope you write back.

Sincerely,

Dear Soldier,

My name is Cody. I live in the small town of Onekama, MI and my friends sometimes hang out down there. We usually skate or just hang out. Most of the time we go to Manistee because they have a good skate park there. We have beaches but that is about all we have in Onekama.  I have about 8 people in my family. I have a nephew who is older than me. I have a mom, dad, sister, and my 3 dogs. And my cats, but we hardly every see them. I am 13 and I love to skateboard, play basketball, and wrestle. What I like to watch on T.V. is Raw, ECW, and Smackdown. I also like to watch scary movies and funny ones. I don’t really like to read though. That’s pretty much all there is to know about me.

Hi again, what is your name? Where do you usually live when you’re not serving our country? Also, what do you and your friends like to do for fun? War sounds scary but you guys are doing a great job. So, do you have any pets or family back at home? What kind of movies do you like to watch? And if you don’t know what Raw, ECW and smackdown Is, its wrestling.  So, do you like to read or no? Well you guys are doing a great job in Iraq keep it up.

Anyways, thanks for giving up your time to go to Iraq and protect our country. You also increase our patriotism and we’re all hoping that you guys can come home soon. We also thank you for spending time away from your families. It must be really tough for you guys. This really means a lot to us and we are thanking you again. Also, we thank you for risking your lives to protect ours, hope you get this.

Sincerely,

Cody, grade 7

Dear Soldier,

Hopefully you’re safe still by the time this gets to you, and I hope you read it, and maybe write back. My name is Madalyn (obviously, since it is the first thing on the page) and I hope you are not feeling weird because of my sense of humor. Sorry. I’m a pretty good student, but since this is the first day of the second marking period, the grades (hopefully) will reset. My dad is gone for a week in… um… Mississippi, and my grandma has to take his place. … I live in the “pinky” of Michigan, in Arcadia – which happens to be the smallest town ever in history. Honestly, the only people there are cute little babies, and senior citizens. At least I can baby-sit. I have a mom, dad (in… Mississippi), and my little sister (who is ten, two years younger that me). I think that she thinks that she’s so small, she has to make up for her size by biting, hitting, punching, everything. She’s a monster.

Anyway, what do you do in the army? What’s Iraq like? Are you completely exhausted? Do you totally want to come home? You live in Michigan, right? Where – about? Any kids, wife, etc? Come to think of it, that might not be a good thing to ask. You totally don’t have to answer me back, but it’d be cool, because… I don’t know why. I’d just like it. Oh yeah, one more question – what’s your name?

Thanks a lot for going over to Iraq for America…

Sincerely,

Madalyn, grade 7

Dear Soldier,

Hey my name is Katie, some people call me Nicole though, for short, or in other words just a nick name. I am 12 years old and my birthday is July 16th… I have a mom and a dad, and one step dad. I also have 3 dogs-- 2 girls and one boy: Angel, Shades and Dog. I have one best friend named Shamika, all my other friends are just close to me, but not as close as her. When we hang out on the weekends we like to go to the mall, and the beach, we also like to stay home and watch scary movies until 12:00 midnight.  I don’t have a favorite book, and it’s hard to pick a favorite movie so I don’t have one of those either. T.V shows I couldn’t really tell you, there are a lot of good ones out there. For fun I like to shop, and play with my dogs. I also love to play basket ball. Soccer, football, and volley ball occasionally. I don’t really have a favorite class in school, I like math kind of. Well enough about me let me ask you some questions.

I know it’s really hot in Iraq, but how is it there and what is your job in the war? What is it like, are you ever scared? I know I sure would be.  Do you have any family at home where you use to live before you went into the war? Like kids, wife or a girl friend? I was wondering can you play sports where you’re at, and if you can what do you play? Do you have any friends in the army? I’m sure you do, but I just wanted to ask.  Oh and what do you like to do on your spare time? And what kind of guns do you use? I’m sure not the kind I use for hunting, but then again you might.

Thank you for being in the war for our county. You’ve taken also of time just to fight for us, when you could be in college or doing what’s fun for you. If you ask me, what you’re doing would be called patriotism: when you devote your time for your country and fight for your country so thank you, thank you very much.

Sincerely,

Katie, grade 7
