Text Box:  Shirley Chisholm was born on November 30, 1924. She was born in Brooklyn. She was born to a Barbadian mother and a Guyanese father. Her Birth name was Shirley St. Hill. She spent most of her time in Barbados with her grandmother. She lived in two places. Barbados and New York. She earned her graduates degree from Columbian University in 1952. Before entering congress she taught school.
             
             Chisholm was the first African American women congress. She served 7 terms. It lasted from 1969-1982 when she retired. She was a representative from New York’s 12th district. She won an election to congress in 1968. She ran for democratic President in 1972. Then in 1982 she retired. 
 
           She was retired for 23 years. Then later on January 1, 2005, she died.
