Jacob Lawrence

 

           Jacob Lawrence was born on September 7, 1917. He was born in Atlantic City in New Jersey.  Jacob was an American painter.  The thing he likes to paint is historical African American topics.

             Jacob and his two siblings had to go to a foster care because their parents got divorced.  There were woods by his foster home and he liked to wander in the woods. When he was about 12 he went back to his mom and moved to Harlem, New York. This was Jacob’s first art class in Utopia House in Harlem.  His first art teacher’s name was Alston.

             Jacob Lawrence studied at Harlem Art Workshop, New York.  He won the scholarship to the New York City’s America Artist School.  Jacob was known for unique serial paintings of the history of African Americans. He, through his work, has provided a revolution for justice and social change. His work shows the struggle for freedom, joy, and happiness of people all over the world.

           Jacob died in June 9, 2000. The age when he died was 82. He died in Seattle, Washington. He moved to Washington in 1971.
