James Baldwin

James Arthur Baldwin was born Aug. 2, 1924. James was born in Harlem, New York. His mother Emma Birdis Jones was a single a single mother at the time. James Baldwin spent an impoverished boyhood in Harlem.

 

           When James Baldwin was young his mother married a preacher. James Baldwin’s adopted father was David. James Baldwin went to the prestigious De Witt Clinton Public High School in New York. When he was the age of 14 he attended the Pentecostal Church and became a preacher. When James was at the age 17, He turned away from religion and moved to Greenwich Village. This New York City neighborhood was famous for its freethinking.
