Cross Country

"Pride, Honor, and Tradition"
by Sarah Schmoke

Every one is gasping for breath, but in every cross-country runner’s mind the first place medal is what they’re running for. Onekama and Bear Lake middle school have a combined cross-country team. The team gets together everyday after school at Bear Lake for practice. Their meets are held at several different places including WSCC (old home course) and The Bear Lake Ball Fields (our brand new course!). They have had nine meets and now they are first in the league.

Pride, honor, and tradition are what the middle school cross-country team coach, Amanda Reed, wants every runner to have. In the cross-country meets, middle school participants run between 1.5 to 2 miles. But in practice they run up to four miles. Cross-country has a short season, and it comes around every fall. This is a sport that is offered for boys and girls. “I thought the sport was very challenging,” said Emily Bowman, a middle school cross-country runner from Onekama.

Cross-country is a great sport. It helps keep you healthy and strong. And most important, it is fun too. There are no hard rules or regulations to cross-country. I would like to say great job to all the middle school cross-country runners, that worked so hard to accomplish their goals this year!
