Programs Enhanced Through Community Involvement

Onekama PTO

The Onekama PTO (Parent/Teacher Organization) is small in numbers but large in their commitment to serving the children of the District.  The PTO generates funds in a number of ways including the Oleson’s Grocery Receipts, Box Tops for Education, School Store, and a Local Products (honey, syrup, salsa, dressings) Fundraiser.  Their efforts generate funds totaling over $3500 annually.  In turn, these funds are used to provide educationally-based field trips.  PTO assists with March Reading Month activities, guided reading books, good behavior ski day, and field day.

Athletic Boosters

The Onekama Athletic Boosters recently held their annual Picnic In The Park serving up barbeque chicken and ribs.  This annual event generates funds that are used to purchase new uniforms for athletes, equipment for sporting events and scholar athlete awards.  The Athletic Boosters recognize scholar athletes on a quarterly basis with a certificate and pin.  These recognitions take place during the monthly Board of Education meetings.

Band Boosters

The Onekama Band Boosters recently took on the responsibility of maintaining the local paper recycling trailer.  They also generate funds by providing concession at sporting events.  The boosters provide for the participation in Solo & Ensemble competitions, the repair and maintenance of band instruments and other needed items for the music department

Giving Tree Project

As the economy in Michigan continues to struggle so do many families and children of Onekama Consolidated Schools.  Each year the Onekama PTO with the help of the Onekama Lions Club generously help several families during the Christmas season.  Our combined efforts provide new winter coats, boots, shirts, pants, shoes as well as food and household products to help ease the financial burden that families endure during the holidays

Portage Lake Water Study and Watershed Program

Each school year since 1993, Onekama High School science students, under the supervision of their teacher Jim Hunter, take samples from three dedicated sites in Portage Lake. The purpose of the Portage Lake Water Study is to produce and update a report on the condition of Portage Lake as a continuation of a lake study conducted by the Snell Environmental Group on behalf of the Michigan Department of Natural Resources and the Village of Onekama. The study is centered around six measurements that students collect and test: dissolved oxygen levels, total phosphorus, chlorophyll-a, pH, clarity, and the temperature profile

The success of any school district is through the combined efforts of the parents—school—and community.  Through these strong partnerships Onekama Consolidated Schools has been able to offer their students a balanced educational experience.  In addition to  core academics, our students have an opportunity to participate in industrial technology, athletics, band, vocal music, art, competition, physical education and drama
