“It’s a workout, but
it’s fun,” said participant Mary Fairgrieve about OCS
Fitness Center indoor cycling class.
Since last October, residents from as far away as
Benzonia and Ludington with a majority from the Onekama
area have attended OCS Fitness Center fitness classes
with indoor cycling the most popular. Other classes
include Boot Camp, Cardio, Core and Circuits, Beach
Fitness and Adult Circuit Training. Classes are held
in the activities room and also in the fitness room
which opened just over a year ago. The Beach Fitness
Classes were held in June and August and included a
beach workout at the Portage Point Road turnaround.
“We are so fortunate to have this great facility in
Onekama,” said Leann Burger, fitness class instructor.
“We’ve had a wonderful response from OCS school district
patrons in their use of the fitness room and attendance
at the fitness classes.”
Although the schedule for the fall classes is not final,
indoor cycling will definitely be back in the rotation
four days a week with a Saturday Video Cycling class.
“Boot Camp is always popular, but so is the Cardio, Core
and Circuits class. Hopefully, a climbing wall class
will also be offered to both adults and children 12
years and older,” said Burger.
Memberships to the fitness room, which contains
treadmills, elliptical and stationary bicycles along
with a universal weight machine, free weights and core
strengthening equipment, are available. Volunteers are
always needed to help staff the fitness room.

Food Service Program
With the
help of Renee DeWindt, Food Service Director
of Frankfort/ Elberta School, and the
Alliance for Economic Success $60,000 U.S.
Department of Agriculture Rural Development
grant we were able to incorporate local
fruits, vegetables and meat into our food
program. To help us celebrate the Farm to
School initiative, we invited parents,
community members, Debbie Stabenow’s office,
the USDA and the Michigan Land Use Institute
to join us for lunch on November 17
utilizing vegetables and fruit from the
following farms: Jack & Deb Miller, Calvin
Lutz, Jim Bardenhagen, and Jim and Margarite
of WAK Enterprises, Randy Rice Meats, and
Cream Cup Dairy Milk. It was a great
Success! During the year our program was
also showcased for Carl Levin’s office and
the Wall Street Journal.
The
students, staff, parents and the school
board rallied behind us to prove that
providing a nutritious breakfast and lunch
plays an integral part of a student’s
learning ability. The kitchen staff is
looking forward to continuing our quest for
nutritious and tasty meals.
We served
3,369 more breakfasts and 8,660 lunches this
past year!
