Learning via Technology - Helps with Understanding

Computer Education is integrated throughout the K-12 curriculum where as in industry and everyday life, technology is a tool used to open the door to information and streamline processes.  Teachers are consistently being trained to learn and utilize best practices in the education process.  Our purpose is to help children learn more effectively using the latest, most up-to-date technical tools and techniques.

Kindergarten students through third-graders spend time in our well-equipped elementary computer lab on a weekly basis.  They are introduced to the basics and given purposeful and challenging assignments that support and enhance grade-level curriculum objectives. Students also have their first experience with learning proper techniques for keyboarding and discover how to create PowerPoint presentations.  As a result of building bond dollars, teachers have the use of smart board technology to teach more effectively.

Starting the 2009/2010 school year, two new classroom sets of mini-laptop/tablets will be available to all 4th and 5th grade students. Teachers integrate lessons across the curriculum on a daily basis.  On-line programs have been purchased to help students develop their skills specifically related to the state’s current benchmarks on the MEAP test.  Students hone their presentation skills and present what they have learned using a multitude of media

Sixth through eighth grade students have access to a wide range of technologies including a middle-school computer lab where teachers plan computer activities on a regular basis.  Many instructors are now using on-line testing techniques that give students immediate feedback on their test questions.  Also, students are able to access their grades, assignments and resource materials on-line

In addition, each middle school and high school classroom is equipped with smart board technology allowing teachers and students to have the ability to view VCR/DVD/TV as well as computer internet, streaming videos and a sophisticated document camera.  This new technology was included with the bond proposal

Technology and computers are not limited to academic classes.  Our special education instructors utilize special needs software that help students with learning challenges, understand their assignments and make their experience in the regular classrooms more effective.  Our art program includes using painting, drawing and other graphic programs including Adobe PhotoShop that introduce our students to a wider range of artistic expression.  The 2009/2010 school year also marks the creation of a new art studio computer lab paid for through funds raised by the building bond.  Onekama has a computer enhanced piano keyboarding program/lab that is used in both the elementary and high school music programs.  Included in our industrial arts program is a computer aided drafting program in addition to Google SketchUp where students locally learn this valuable skill.  In addition, our Spanish program utilizes language programs that help make instruction more valuable
