Onekama Consolidated Schools
pride themselves in high academic achievement and this
year is no different. We boost a 100% graduation rate
of the enrolled senior class with an average GPA above
3.00: 48% were above 3.00 and 24% above 3.50. We
routinely have co-valedictorian and co-salutatorians.
This year 93% of our high
school graduates have enrolled in a college or
university with one student accepted to Harvard
University. One of our graduates has been accepted to
the Seafarers International Union, one has been accepted
into the United States Air Force and one has elected to
join the work force.
High School
Achievement
|
Onekama is a K-12 district campus and with that
distinction comes many advantages and opportunities for
our high school students to work one on one with our
elementary students. It not only builds a wonderful and
strong mentoring program in academics, but builds a
future of nurturing students in our entire building.
An excellent example includes our high school students
working closely with elementary students during their
chemistry class in which the use of the telescope is a
prized activity. Another opportunity to build strong
relationships between our students is when our high
school students interview elementary children and give
them an opportunity to read to the other students.
World Language Spanish is
offered as part of our high school graduation
requirements set by the Michigan Merit Curriculum. Mrs.
Kolehmainen is an innovative Spanish teacher as proven
by the variety of hands on techniques used to cement
this foreign language in our students. Our high school
students created “How To” videos in Spanish and included
directions for making hot chocolate, macaroni & cheese
and Kool Aid. The Michigan Standards taught in this
section includes 1.2.M.L.D.u understanding the main
idea and summarize an audio presentation. |
