Math Counts
High academic
achievement is prevalent in our middle school as well as
high school. Two teams from our middle school were
one of twelve schools that participated in the 24th
annual
Math Counts
competition held at West Shore Community College. This
was a record year with 209 students attending the
competition which tested their math skills against
questions developed by local engineers. All the
participates qualify for a $350 scholarship in math
classes at West Shore Community College. Onekama had
three students place in the top 10 of individual scores.
Quiz
Bowl Champions
Onekama middle school students continue to excel as they
participated in the local quiz bowl competition held at
Brethren High School. Nine students formed a strong
team finishing first place in the county
Monster Trucks & Sound Waves
While
exploring a section on sound waves in 7th
grade science the Deleon family to brought in their
Monster Truck to demonstrate powerful sound waves. The
kids could feel the sound of the engine in their ribs!
It was so cool! Mr. Deleon mentioned that the engine
produces 600 horsepower----which is 2 times the amount
our normal cars produce. It was such a treat for them
to bring in this very awesome example of SOUND WAVES!! |
Curriculum Related Presentations
The middle school social studies curriculum offers a
wide variety of opportunities to invite visitors to
present real life experiences to our students. This
year we had a presentation by a military sergeant of
the United States Air Force who was stationed in the
middle east. He was able share his experiences as it
related to the geographic topics being covered in the
current social studies syllabus. A power point
presentation highlighted the native animal life, sand
storms and large aircraft and aircraft equipment.
Following the presentation, the students were given a
writing assignment about the presentation
While many districts suffer the reduction of staff and
other elective class offerings for middle school
students, Onekama continues to provide a variety of
opportunities for all students to succeed. We continue
to offer Spanish Foreign Language to our middle school
students where they have an opportunity to earn 1.5
credits that are then applied to their high school
graduation requirements. This past year the middle
school students produced weather videos using the
Spanish language as their means of communicating the
weather forecast to their peer group.
Outside the walls of academic achievement is the
exposure to a cooperative drama club in conjunction with
two other county districts. This year the production of
the Wizard of Oz
cast many students and several of our middle school
students committed to the enormous hours of practice
time and then the final production |
