Water Quality

Back in the classroom, Mr. Hunter's group continues to study the waters they collected. (Well, they will in a minute--right after this photo.)

Ah, here they are in the classroom grouped around their laptop computers and ready to work.

Prior to the class work, the students take a pre-test to see how much they already know about Portage Lake.

They sit attentively to hear Mr. Hunter's lectures about the lake study.

The study is a continuation of the pre-existing lake study that the Snell Environmental, Inc. group did. The goal of the study was to identify procedures and methods required in order to control sources of nutrient loading into Portage Lake.

The culmination of the lake study is the presentation to the village and township officials. Student attend the meetings and present their findings.

Here's another of Mr. Hunter's groups ready to continue the water study.

To reflect on their adventures, students make PowerPoint presentations and practice presenting them to the rest of the class. They show what they learned and saw.

As they reflect on their involvement in the project, they realize what they have done will be important to their community.

Students keep daily journals entries and do "quick writes" as the lake study progresses. At the end of the project students write a reflection paper. They receive extensive coverage from the local news paper and T.V. station.
