MANISTEE — Despite nearly three weeks off since its last match, Manistee Catholic Central didn’t look rusty.

The Sabers rolled to a 25-10, 25-19, 25-19 West Michigan D League win against Onekama on Tuesday night.

“I asked them to come out and play hard and call the ball,” said MCC coach Lauren Welsh, “and just put everything they’ve got into it.”

MCC, which hadn’t played since Aug. 29, surged to a 10-point lead in the first game, then rallied from a five-point deficit in the second game as Amber Robke served up six straight points to put the Sabers ahead for good. The third game began with 10 straight side outs before MCC slowly pulled away from Onekama.

Robke led the Sabers by serving up 20 points, including seven aces, to go with five assists while Alysha Heck had seven points, 15 kills and 10 digs. Alexis Miller had six points, Kaytlin Heck had three kills, 11 assists and six digs and Meghan Miller chipped in three kills.

“They were talking really well,” Welsh said. “We had a lot of good passes, sets and a lot of kills from both Alysha and Meghan. Amber and Kaytlin did great on sets all over the floor moving to the ball. A lot of hustle too.”

Onekama coach Sherri Slater said the statistics, namely a lack of kills, were telling.

“We had the hits, they were getting them in, but it’s just not a hard enough attack,” she said. “We need to start really pounding on the ball instead of sending what a lot of teams would almost think of as a free ball. I think that’s basically the bottom line: We’ve got to stop giving them these easy balls.”

McKayla Haske had four kills, Anna Brown served at 90 percent with two kills, four assists and an ace and Quinn LaMont had two kills and six assists as the Portagers worked on a new offense.

“Like I told them, as long as we keep making the forward progress,” Slater said, “which this was forward progress from our last match.”

MCC has now won both of its dual matches, bookending a pair of tournaments.

“I like these kind of games where you can kind of rotate and get some subs in and get some different rotations involved and see who plays better where,” Welsh said. “All around a very good game.”

The MCC JV team beat Onekama 25-18, 25-15.
