BIG RAPIDS — The Bear Lake boys and girls swept the second West Michigan D League jamboree of the season on Wednesday at Big Rapids Crossroads Charter Academy.

“We’re kind of eyeing the Carson City and Portage meets coming up in a couple weeks, so today and the (league) race next week are all about building to run well at those bigger invitationals,” said Bear Lake coach Tony Shrum. “Today the goal was to run really well the second mile — that’s where the kids have been kind of struggling, which is traditionally probably the hardest part of a 5K, that middle mile. They did a pretty good job.”

The Bear Lake boys finished first with 17 points, followed by Pentwater (83), Walkerville (85), Mason County Eastern (93), Crossroads (126) and Brethren (198).

Jordan Anderson and John Girven finished first and second, respectively, in 18:36, while John Schoedel (third, 18:50), Jared Bair (fifth, 18:53) and Cole Verrett (sixth, 19:01) rounded out the team score. Michael Belinsky (eighth, 19:43) and Shane Peterson (10th, 19:56) also ran for the Lakers.

Josh Riggs (21st, 21:16) and Bailey Lewis (45th, 29:47) were Brethren’s lone runners.

The Bear Lake girls tallied 20 points, followed by MCE (63), Walkerville (76), Crossroads (89), Pentwater (94) and Brethren (103).
