Lakers place fifth, seventh at Spartan Invitational
EAST LANSING — The Bear Lake
girls placed fifth and the boys finished seventh in the
Division 3/4 race at the Spartan Invitational on Friday at
Michigan State University’s Forest Akers East golf course.
Six Lakers — three boys and three girls — medaled for
finishing in the top 30.
“It was very good
competition,” said Bear Lake coach Tony Shrum. “It was our
first time down there and we had very good runs.”
The Bear Lake girls finished
with 157 points while Ithaca emerged from a thick group to
win with 121, followed by Kalamazoo Hackett Catholic Central
(126), Breckenridge (146) and Napoleon (151).

Kenna Gilbert finished 16th in 20:20 to lead
the Lakers while Faith Moerdyk (21st, 20:29), McKaya Groenwald (23rd,
20:33), Alycia Peterson (53rd, 21:33) and Kelly Babcock (55th, 21:34)
rounded out the scoring. Alyson Fink (88th, 22:47) and Meredith Hengy
(128th, 23:52) also ran for the Lakers.
Napoleon won the boys race with 118 points
while Bear Lake finished with 176.
John Girven (13th, 17:20), Jordan Anderson
(16th, 17:21), John Schoedel (29th, 17:44), Cole Verrett (62nd, 18:23)
and Shane Peterson (70th, 18:28) completed the team score while Jared
Bair (87th, 18:47) and Michael Belinsky (96th, 18:59) also ran for the
Lakers.
“Not coming home with a trophy is a little
unusual for us,” Shrum said, “but not necessarily a bad thing.” |
