Portagers split two matches, drop two at the Frankfort Tournament

Frankfort: The Onekama Volleyball team opened its season by splitting a pair of matches and dropping two in a tournament at Frankfort.

The Portagers were shorthanded and spent the majority of the day with just six players, only two of whom had previous varsity experience. They split their first two matches against Frankfort (16-25), 25-22) and Northport (11-25, 25-17) before losing to Mason County Eastern (11-25, 12-25) and Traverse City Christian (21-25, 17-25).

"I thought they really stepped up and did pretty well," said Onekama Coach Sherri Slater. "We had that little rough patch against MCE, but they didn't stop and hang their heads or anything.  They came back and I thought they played a real good match against TC Christian."

Becky Cunningham led the Portagers with four aces and six kills, Sami Tiefenthal had three aces and five kills and Hailey Kott served at 92 percent with an ace.
