Portagers take two from Lakers

ONEKAMA — The Onekama softball team swept its West Michigan D League doubleheader against rival Bear Lake on Thursday to remain in contention for the title.

With the 13-3 and 11-0 wins over the Lakers, the Portagers are currently tied for second in the standings with Mason County Eastern.

“All the way around, it was a pretty good night for us,” said Onekama coach Rob Johnson. “We played pretty good defense, and our bats were there.”

In the opener, Kaylor DeWitt, Elizabeth Bergren, and Hailey Kott each had a pair of hits for the Portagers (14-7, 10-3 WMD) while Emily Bergren got the win in the circle by allowing eight hits with three strikeouts.

Onekama’s Madeleine Smeltzer, Elizabeth Bergren, and Kaylan Fitch each had two hits in the nightcap while Ashley Kubiskey threw her second shutout of the season in the circle with eight strikeouts.

Bear Lake (11-0, 7-5 WMD) struggled in the circle in the series, and were paced by Alyson Fink and Briann Bowling at the plate, who each had a pair of hits in the opener.

“Too many walks,” said Bear Lake coach Garret Waller said. “We struggled pitching tonight. We just put too many runners on base.”
