Portagers answer Sabers’ rally to salvage series split

MANISTEE — One out from suffering its first loss since the season opener, Manistee Catholic Central rallied with four runs to take the lead.

One out from being swept by MCC for the second time in a week, Onekama responded with four runs of its own for the win.

And with that, the Portagers (12-7, 8-3 WMD) salvaged a West Michigan D League split against the Sabers (8-2, 6-2 WMD) on Monday at First Street Beach. MCC won the first game 7-1 and Onekama rallied for a 9-8 win in the chilly nightcap.

“We really wanted to win this,” said Onekama’s Ashley Kubiskey, who got the win in the second game and delivered the walk-off RBI single. “It would have been nice if we would have won the first game too, but coming out with just one win is fantastic.”

The league-leading Sabers came through with late hits of their own, but simply couldn’t get the final out to put the Portagers away.

“We got going,” said MCC senior Haley Doyle, “but then they got their bats going too at a convenient time for them.”

Amber Robke got the win in the first game as she allowed just one unearned run on four hits with eight strikeouts. The Sabers got all the offense they needed in the first inning with three runs on just one hit as they took advantage of physical and mental errors by the Portagers.

“We talked about that as a team,” said Onekama coach Rob Johnson. “We said when an out presents itself, we need to take care of it.”

MCC tacked on three runs in the fourth on an RBI single by Hannah Janicki and two-run single by Robke. Courtney Sorenson added an RBI triple in the fifth while Doyle and Jordan Barnett both finished with a pair of hits for the Sabers.

“I think the girls played pretty decent,” said MCC coach Dave Lijewski. “Defensively, we weren’t as sharp today as we were (against Onekama last week). The girls know we have a little work to do and they’re going to work on it.”

Kaylan Fitch led the Portagers with a pair of hits while Emily Bergren, who took a line drive off her knee during the third inning, stayed in the game but suffered the loss while striking out three.

The Sabers, who swept the Portagers in a non-league series last week, took an early lead in the second game with four runs on four hits in the second inning as Sorenson and Doyle knocked RBI singles and Alysha Heck came through with a two-run single.

Onekama responded with a five-run fourth, loading the bases on a walk, a hit and an error before Hannah Gilbert drove in a run and Fitch and Madeleine Smeltzer both delivered two-run hits for the 5-4 lead.

“It was pretty obvious in the second game that we were a little more mentally prepared for a softball game than that first game,” Johnson said. “We were a little flat (in the opener).”

Onekama’s outburst resulted in a pitching change as Sydney Arendt moved from third to the circle to take over for Robke. Arendt gave up back-to-back singles to open the fifth, but induced a groundout and helped start a 1-3-2 inning-ending double play.

MCC loaded the bases with two outs in the top of the sixth before scoring the tying and go-ahead runs on wild pitches before Jodi Janowiak ripped a two-run single up the middle for an 8-5 lead.

“We had some big hits and some timely hits,” Lijewski said. “We were battling at the end there.”

Sorenson led the Sabers with three hits while Heck and Meagan Sorenson each finished with two.

Arendt got the first two outs of the sixth but walked back-to-back batters and was replaced by Robke, who surrendered three straight hits.

“Amber ran out of gas at the end there,” Lijewski said. “We didn’t have anybody else we could put out there at the time. She held her ground as best she could. Unfortunately, after they’ve seen you for two games, they’re going to start timing you and that’s what happened there.”

Elizabeth Bergren drilled a three-run triple to left, Emily Bergren knocked an RBI double to tie the game at 8 and Kubiskey connected on the walk-off single.

“I was just hoping that I would hit it,” Kubiskey said with a smile.

Johnson complimented his team’s resilience.

“When you’re down and you get two outs quick like that, you’ve just got to rely on your bats to come through,” he said. “Today, it was pretty obvious our girls were here to hit the ball and they rattled (MCC’s) pitching staff pretty good in the later part of that second game.”

Kubiskey finished with three hits to lead the Portagers and struck out seven.

“I’m really happy with the way the girls didn’t give up,” Johnson said. “They haven’t been one of those teams that have given up … and today we were on the right end of that.”

A sweep Monday would have seriously hampered Onekama’s shot at a league title, although the Portagers will still need some help to have a chance of catching MCC.

“For the kids, I think it’s a great confidence builder knowing that they can play against a good team,” Johnson said. “Anytime I can play close with MCC, I’m happy.”
