Brethren takes two from Onekama

ONEKAMA — Brethren swept a West Michigan D League series from county rival Onekama on Monday with an 8-4 win in the opener and a 12-4 victory in the nightcap.

“After our game with Mesick (Saturday), we wanted to focus on putting together six solid innings,” Bobcats coach Jason McElrath said of a disappointing loss over the weekend in which his team saw a 5-0 lead slip away. “We wanted to maintain momentum, and I was really happy with how our seniors stepped up to help us do that.”

Onekama statistics were unavailable.

Brethren’s Lexi Lakso pitched a pair of complete games, allowing four runs (two earned) on four hits with eight strikeouts in the opener, and four runs (two earned) on five hits and a walk with seven strikeouts in the nightcap.

Brethren (7-3, 6-0 WMD) jumped out to significant leads in each game.

In the opener, the Bobcats went up 6-0 after two innings and were led at the plate by Cailon Modjeski and Hailey Guinan, each with two hits and two RBIs, while Annie MacNeil had two hits and an RBI.

A nine-run first inning sparked Brethren in the nightcap while Jamie Alfrejd led the way with two hits, including a double, with two RBIs. Lakso, Modjeski, and Guinan each had two hits and an RBI.
