Onekama splits with Frankfort

FRANKFORT — The Onekama softball team split a non-league doubleheader at Frankfort on Friday, losing the opener 2-0 before winning the second game 3-2.

“It was a fantastic day,” said Onekama coach Rob Johnson. “It was softball at its best.”

Frankfort scored its only runs of the opener in the first inning.

“We were a little flat when we came out,” said Johnson, whose team had won five mercy-rule shortened games prior to Friday. “I think having a couple easy teams coming in proved costly against an aggressive team like Frankfort.”

Hailey Kott had a double to lead the Portagers (6-1).

Emily Bergren took the loss in the opener after allowing six hits and no walks while striking out two. She got the win in the second game and yielded just four hits and a walk to go with four strikeouts.

Onekama pushed across the winning run in the fifth inning and was led at the plate by Bergren and Tawny Kott, who both finished with a hit and RBI. Madeleine Smeltzer and Hailey Kott both had a hit.
