MANISTEE — Brethren shot its lowest round of the spring.

Onekama also posted a season-best nine-hole score. But, so did Manistee Catholic Central.

And in their only home match of the season, the Sabers’ 160 total was enough to win a West Michigan D League jamboree on Tuesday at Manistee Golf & Country Club.

“We’re pleased,” said MCC coach Pete Solwold. “That’s a good score here because we haven’t played here much. This is like a road trip for us.

“We’ll take 160 now and work with that.”

MCC senior Zack Bialik had a birdie, bogey and seven pars to shoot an even-par 34 and best the field, but said he wasn’t in position to score better.

“Probably the worst ball striking round I’ve had all year,” Bialik said. “I was near the green or on the green in regulation, but just not close enough to have a lot of good birdie tries. I had a lot of birdie tries, but nothing that I thought I could make for sure.”

Bialik is 2-over for the season in three nine-hole matches and two 18-hole invitationals and has been the medalist all five times.

“It’s not a bad way to start the year,” he said. “I’m on track for where I want to be in June.”

MCC senior Gabe Toczynski shot a 37, Nick Bialik a 44 and Joe Nelson a 45 to complete the team score while Jaime Sierra-Nielsen shot a 48 and Gabe Sidor a 49.

“With the new kids at (Nos.) 4 and 5 this year, we had our doubts about where we could actually go with them,” Solwold said. “We didn’t know if they would gel into players, and they have.”

The Sabers have won two of the three jamborees while Pentwater took the other win and was second Tuesday at 170. Brethren was third with a season-low 172.

“I was very pleased with the scores,” said Brethren coach Tom Anderson. “This is the first match I think we’ve had four guys under 50.”

Bryson Waller led the co-op Bobcats with a 37, but wasn’t thrilled with the number, even though it came on six pars and three bogeys.

“I had four or five birdie putts I could have made inside 8 feet,” he said. “Putting is the downfall of my game and there were a couple drives that should have been a little better.”

Joe Riggs (43), Colton Podbilski (44) and Cory Hilliard (48) rounded out the team score while Alex Dutton (54) and Eli Garcia (56) also played for the Bobcats.

“I think Bryson did a real nice job with his 37 and everybody right down the row, even the guys at (Nos.) 5 and 6 shooting 54 and 56, all those people gave us a chance against real good teams like MCC and Pentwater,” Anderson said. “Even though we lost, I think the kids played pretty well.”

Onekama turned in a team total of 200, also a season low, to take fourth. Mason County Eastern only had three golfers and was unable to post a team score.

Senior Derek Hobart shot a 38 to lead the Portagers.

“I played all right,” said Hobart, who had four bogeys and five pars. “I couldn’t place the ball really at all off the tee. … Just all over the place.”

Alexis Tribfelner and Parker Sternberger shot 53s for the Portagers and Brandon Bohannon a 56. Matt Hull’s 59 and Braden Hagen’s 71 didn’t factor into the team score.

“It’s the best nine-hole round we’ve had yet and progression is still en route,” said Onekama coach Tom McCraner. “They’re all in good spirits and everybody is pretty happy with their scores.”
