MAPLE CITY — Neither the Onekama nor Brethren golf teams were able to keep their seasons alive, but both will be represented by individuals in the regional round.

The Portagers finished seventh (393) and Bobcats ninth (401) in a Division 4 district on Thursday at Mistwood Golf Course. The top six teams and top six individuals advance to next Thursday’s regional at Grand Traverse Resort’s Spruce Run. Onekama’s Derek Hobart and Brethren’s Bryson Waller and Joe Riggs were among those individual qualifiers.

Suttons Bay won with a score of 334, while Leland (351), Traverse City St. Francis (353), Glen Lake (362), Mesick (376) and Manton (387) rounded out the team qualifiers with Onekama finishing just out of the mix.

“It was sad to lose by seven strokes, but I’m really proud of the way the golfers played today and I’m really happy with our results,” said Onekama coach Tom McCraner. “We’re happy with the day overall and all the golfers are in support of Derek.”

Hobart, a senior, shot a 79 to finish fourth individually and earn his third regional trip. Alexis Tribfelner (104), Parker Sternberger (105) and Jack Coryell (105) rounded out the Onekama score while Brandon Bohannon’s 106 didn’t factor.

Brethren qualified for the regional as a team each of the previous three seasons.

“I just figured that for sure we’d be able to shoot around 380 and that would have qualified us without a lot of problem,” said Brethren coach Tom Anderson. “We just weren’t able to do that today. The kids were out there trying but just had problems today and we didn’t play to the best of our abilities.”

Waller, a junior, recovered from a rough start to card an 80 and finish fifth.

“He was having problems, he got it together and he did a nice job and finished in the top five,” Anderson said, “which I think is a good accomplishment.”

Riggs, a senior, shot a 98 which was also enough for him to advance.

“Joe wanted to shoot better,” Anderson said, “but that score got him into the regional, which for him is an honor.”

Colton Podbilski (110) and Samantha Mullet (113) completed Brethren’s team score while Alex Dutton’s 127 didn’t factor.
